The Deep Core

The Deep Core (also known as the Deep Galactic Core) was a small region in the galaxy, about seven thousand light years across, that hid unusual worlds. The Deep Core was home to some thirty billion of the galaxy's oldest stars, and at its center was a massive black hole surrounded by antimatter and dense clusters where stars were only a hundredth of a light year apart. In some areas they were in such close proximity, stars would collide and rip the cores from each other. Due to the gravitational pull of the vast number of stars, local space-time was severely warped, making hyperspace travel difficult at best.

Despite the inaccessibility of the Deep Core, the Rakatan Infinite Empire was still able to colonize Byss during the Pre-Republic Era between 35,000 BBY to 25,200 BBY. With the collapse of the Infinite Empire, Byss was presumably abandoned and the Rakatan structures crumbled over the millennia. In 36,453 BBY, the brightest and best philosophers, priests, scientists and warriors convened on Tython to discuss their discoveries involving the enigmatic, mystical Ashla. In 25,973 BBY, the Force Wars erupted on Tython between followers of the Ashla and dissidents who used the Bogan.[1] The former gradually evolved into the Jedi Order and a proactive faction group left Tython to liberate other worlds around 25,783 BBY.These Jedi later established a philosophy school on distant Ossus in the Outer Rim.[2]

Prior to 27,000 BBY, Koros Major was colonized by Human colonists from Coruscant who discovered vast deposits of carbonite in the system’s seven worlds. The Korosians discovered that carbonite could be used to preserve space travellers in a state of suspended animation for interstellar travel, leading to the development of sleeper ships that enabled humans to expand throughout the Galaxy. With the discovery of carbonite and andris spice, Koros Major prospered as a key base of the Mining Guild shortly prior to the formation of the Galactic Republic in 25,053 BBY. With the discovery of the Koros Trunk Line and the invention of the hyperdrive, Republic scouts were able to discover a few habitable worlds within the volatile region including Khomm and Vulpter.[3]Over the millennia, Koros Major prospered from trade with Coruscant and became the largest settlement in the Deep Core frontier, developing into a vibrant ecumenopolis. Prior to the Unification Wars, the Coruscant government owned the Korosian mines but sold them off to the emerging Tetan aristocracy.

Following the Hundred-Year Darkness, the Sith Lord Darth Andeddu built a tomb on Prakith. In 5,010 BBY, Empress Teta of Koros Major waged a prolonged war to consolidate her world’s control over the system’s seven worlds, concluding her campaign in 5,000 BBY with the annexation of Kirrek.[2] During the Great Hyperspace War, Koros and the red giant Primus Goluud in the Goluud system were the sites of battles between Empress Teta’s forces and Sith Lord Naga Sadow’s Sith Empire. With the defeat of the Sith, Koros and its system was renamed Empress Teta and the Teta system in honor of the Empress.[4]Over the centuries leading up to the Great Sith War, Koros prospered and became a strategic economic and military powerhouse within the Deep Core. In 3,997 BBY, the aristocratic Aleema and Satal Keto established the Dark side-using Krath sect which seized control of the Empress Teta system during the early stages of the Sith War and launched the devastating Krath Holy Crusade that engulfed much of the Republic. With the defeat of the Krath and their Mandalorian and Sith allies in 3,996 BBY, Republic control was re-established over the Tetan system.[2]

The region was thought to be inaccessible, but certain individuals found other safe hyperlanes into the region, such as the Byss Run and the Deep Core Run over the millennia. In 980 BBY, Darth Bane travelled to Prakith to recover Darth Andeddu's holocron from the Malevolence cult.[5]During the Clone Wars, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine dispatched scouts and probe droids to explore the region.[3] As the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, he provided the Separatist leadership with access to secret hyperspace routes that allowed them to bypass the heavily-defended Corellian Sector and attack Coruscant in 19 BBY.[3]

During the early Imperial Period, the Galactic Empire established fortress worlds, bases and palaces on several Deep Core worlds. Classified Imperial records indicate that Imperial scouts discovered hundreds of habitable worlds within the region but were permanently eliminated to maintain this secret. Some of these new worlds including Prakith and Byss were selected for Imperial colonization efforts and settled by wealthy Imperial loyalists. Palpatine also nationalized the carbonite mines of Empress Teta and used the planet as a base for probe droids and scouting missions.[3]

The Empire declared the entire region a security zone and all starships entering or exiting the region required authorization from the Bureau of Ships and Services (BoSS) and the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB). The former was responsible for policing the space-lanes while the latter was tasked with protecting Imperial military secrets. Hyperspace jumps were also restricted with spacers required to report to Imperial authorities and receive frequent astrogation updates. As a preemptive against illegal spacers, an Imperial Hyperspace Security Net was established complete with gravity mines and jammers to inhibit communication.[3]

The area remained an Imperial stronghold almost twenty years after the Battle of Endor. Several warlords including Delvardus and Harrsk came to dominate various Deep Core worlds. In 10 ABY, the reborn clone Palpatine used Byss as a staging ground to invade the New Republic during Operation Shadow Hand. Byss also became the site of the world-destroying Galaxy Gun superweapon which destroyed several New Republic targets. Following the death of Palpatine at Onderon in 11 ABY, Byss and the Galaxy Gun were destroyed during a hyperspace collision with the Emperor’s flagship Eclipse II, dealing a heavy blow to Imperial forces in the region.[3]

The remaining warlords squabbled among themselves until they were slain by Admiral Daala during a conference at Tsoss Beacon. One warlord Foga Brill established his own dictatorship on Prakith as a fortress world against the New Republic. However, the latter preferred to contain the Deep Core Imperial warlords and Prakith was overthrown during a coup by moderate elements that made peace with the Republic.[3]

During the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion, the Imperial Remnant’s leader Gilad Pellaeon supplied the Republic with information on secret Imperial hyperspace routes in the region. Using this information, Leia Organa Solo planned a trap for the aliens, drawing them into the difficult-to-navigate region.[3]In 137 ABY, Prakith was visited by Darth Wyyrlok the Third who destroyed Darth Andeddu while on a mission to find a cure for his master Darth Krayt’s illness.[6]

The Core


The Core (also known as the Galactic Core and, during the Imperial era, the Imperial Core) were some of the most prestigious, well-developed, well-known, and heavily populated planets in the galaxy. In astrophysical terms, the Core denoted the central area of the galaxy, and in broad terms this was true enough, but the precise usage of the term was sometimes more complex.

The major Rimward hyperlanes radiated outwards around little more than half the galactic disk, and the Core Worlds occupied a C-shaped region of space around the Deep Core, the heart of the astrophysical core (generally considered to be a separate outlier area), extending outwards towards the Unknown Regions.

Pre-Republic era

For much of galactic history, little was known about the history and cultures of the Core Words prior to the formation of the Galactic Republic in 25,053 BBY. Among many prominent galactic circles, it was believed that Humans originated in one of the Core Worlds. It was widely speculated that Coruscant was the birthplace of humanity though there was little to no archaeological evidence to support that theory.[1][2] Around 1,000,000 BBY, the Celestials created the Corellian system by using the massive Centerpoint Station to tractor the five planets Corellia, Selonia, Drall, Talus and Tralus through hyperspace around the star Corell. The planets were then settled with Selonians, Dralls and humans from Coruscant; resulting in the system's multi-species population. The Celestials also used similar technology to construct the Vultar system.[2]

Around 200,000 BBY, war broke out on Coruscant between the near-Human Taungs and the 13 baseline Human nations of the Battalions of Zhell. A volcano decimated the Zhell, the ash filling the skies for two years, so the Taungs adopted the name Dha Werda Verda (Warriors of Shadow) for themselves. The Human Zhell eventually recovered and drove the Taungs offworld.[1][2] Around 100,000 BBY, Coruscant and the Duros homeworld of Duro were surveyed by the Columi, who dismissed the native civilizations on these worlds as primitive disappointments.[2]During this period, Coruscant's surface was gradually covered by the planet-spanning ecumenopolis of Galactic City. New buildings were built on the old. As a result, there was virtually no exposed land. In the forgotten underlevels of the city, there was darkness, pollution and crime. Higher up, there were government offices and penthouses owned by the elite. The lower fifty levels of the ecumenopolis is said to have last seen sunlight around 95,000 BBY.[1][2]

In 35,000 BBY, the insectoid Killiks of Alderaan built the Castle Lands of Oroboro. At some point, the Killiks colonized nearby Alsakan. They were taken away from Alderaan 30,000 BBY by the Celestials after consuming all of Alderaan's natural resources, and long believed extinct by the galaxy until re-encountered in the Unknown Regions in 35 ABY.[3]

Between 35,000 BBY to 25,200 BBY, the Infinite Empire of the Rakata conquered and enslaved the inhabitants of several worlds within the Core region including Coruscant, Duro and the Corellian systems. Slaves from these worlds were used to build the Star Forge in 30,000 BBY.[2] Under Rakatan domination, the Humans of Coruscant's colonization attempts were limited to sleeper ships, which ended up on Alderaan, in the Tion Cluster, Seoul 5, Kuat, Alsakan, Axum, Anaxes, Atrisia, Metellos, Corulag, Csilla and many other worlds.[2] The Rakata were eventually decimated by a massive plague, leading to slave revolutions on their subject worlds in the Core.[2]

Over the next two centuries, Coruscant was linked to other Core Worlds including Corellia, Alderaan, New Plympto and Duro, by hyperspace cannons, via the Herglic Trade Empire.[2] It was during this time that the Coruscant government peacefully absorbed the nearby Azure Imperium. During these pre-Republic years, the languages of Coruscant and its neighbors meshed to become Old Galactic Standard.[4] Before the invention of the hyperdrive, galactic civilization was limited to the Core Worlds. Densely populated and heavily industrialized, the Core Worlds gradually developed into a socio-economical power house essential for galactic domination over the millennia.[4]

In 25,053 BBY, the Galactic Republic was born with the signing of the Galactic Constitution in the aftermath of the Unification Wars. Its founders were a number of key Core Worlds known collectively as the Core Founders including Coruscant, Alderaan, Duro, Kuat and Humbarine.[2] As an early founder of the Republic, Duro entered a golden age under the leadership of Queen Rana Mas Trehalt. Later, the monarchy was abolished in favor of a collection of ruling corporations administrated by the Duros High House which was led by a Chief Representative Officer. During that period, Human and Duros scientists reverse-engineered the Rakatan hyperdrive; inventing the modern hyperdrive. This led to vigorous colonization in a small patch of the Core known as the Tetrahedron. [5]

The Tetrahedron was based on the concepts of a Duros hyperspatial physicist who theorized that Coruscant, Alderaan, Corellia and the Ginn Jump were the four corners of a specific region of space.[5]Due to its strategic location and heavy infrastructure, Coruscant was the capital of the Republic; thus bearing the coordinates 0-0-0 on hyperspace maps. The discovery of the Perlemian Trade Route linked Coruscant to the Outer Rim world of Ossus, which became the domain of the Jedi Order over the subsequent millennia and a fortress world blocking Tionese and Hutt expansion into the Core.[2]Over the next millennia, the Corellian Run was mapped, linking Coruscant to Corellia and beyond. The wedge defined by the two trade routes became known as "the Slice". The Core Worlds' portion of the Slice was known as the Arrowhead, and soon the Republic expanded into the Colonies. [2]Several Core Worlds like Anaxes, Basilisk and Ixtlar prospered from this territorial boom. [5]

In 24,000 BBY, war broke out between the Republic and the Union; spreading both sides of the Perlemian. The Republic won by turning the Hutts against the Tionese; ending the Union's existence as an independent state and paving the way for galactic domination by the Core-based Republic.[2] By 23,900 BBY, the worlds of the former Honorable Union had all joined the Republic with the exception of Desevro which remained proudly isolationist. At first, the government on Coruscant wished for slow expansion, despite its promotion of hyperspace exploration. However, against the government's wishes, the membership of the Republic boomed for its first millennium of existence, mainly due to worlds wishing to join as protection against the Hutt Empire.[6]

During the Great Manifest Period (20,000 BBY–17,000 BBY), the Republic expanded eastwards across the galaxy into the Inner Rim and Expansion Region. Despite this, the Slice would remain the heart of navigable space[2]. Eventually, the Republic expanded past the galactic-northern and -southern borders of the Slice, though most of the galaxy was still unknown, except for outposts such as Ord Mantell (12,000 BBY) and Malastare (8,000 BBY).[2] The space west of Coruscant still remained unexplored since analogues to the Perlemian Trade Route and the Corellian Run in that direction still had not been discovered. Worse, progress was limited to dangerous one- or two-light-year jumps into a stretch of hyperspatial anomalies. Consequently, the Republic government expanded eastward, instead.[2]

During this period, several key Core Worlds including Coruscant and Alsakan established holdings in the Expansion Region. However, this region suffered greatly as a result of Alsakan attempting to snatch control of the Republic from Coruscant.[7] This resulted in seventeen Alsakan Conflicts, spanning from 17,000 BBY to 3,017 BBY. However, most of the fighting took place between their holdings in the Expansion Region, rather than in the Core itself. Needless to say, Coruscant won every conflict it fought.[7] In 15,500 BBY, after a disastrous first contact, Coruscant was assaulted by Star Dragons in the Duinuogwuin Conflict. The conflict was peacefully resolved by Supreme Chancellor Fillorean and the Star Dragon philosopher Borz'Mat'oh, who together founded the University of Coruscant.[2]

In 12,000 BBY, the Core Worlds came under the influence of the theocratic and humanocentric Pius Dea sect which posited one of their own Contispex as the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic.[2][8] Over the following centuries, his descendants sanctioned several crusades against some rival alien sects in the Outer Rim which fought back; leaving the galaxy in a never-ending state of alternating hot and cold wars.[8]During this period, several military outposts known as Ordnance/Regional Depots were established to ostensibly protect human settlers from hostile alien threats. This further deepened interspecies tensions with the anti-alien nature of the crusades forcing an exodus into Hutt Space and turning the Rimward Slice into a militarized zone dominated by war profiteers.[5]Though Pius Dea rule came to an end in 11,000 BBY, the repercussions of these crusades would sour relations between the Core and the Outer Rim over the millennia.[2]

Redemption

In 9,757 BBY, the Second Herglic Feud occurred. During the Great Hyperspace War in 5,000 BBY, Coruscant was invaded by the Sith Empire which quickly overwhelmed the Legislative District. With the destruction of Sith Lord Naga Sadow’s Sith mediation sphere above Primus Goluud, the Sith forces were driven back by reinforcements from Anaxes. Republic forces then invaded and devastated Sith Space, ending the Sith Empire. [5] In 4,250 BBY, the Third Great Schism was fought on Coruscant with the surviving Dark Jedi fleeing to the Vultar system. The Dark Jedi discovered that the system had been artificially constructed by the Celestials and attempted to use the ancient machinery including the Cosmic Turbine but ended up destroying themselves and the system during the Vultar Cataclysm. [2]

By 4,225 BBY, Kaikielius had become impoverished and became a crime hub dominated by the Neimoidians and Hutts. A joint Jedi and Republic task force ousted the Hutts and other criminal elements, and the planet was rebuilt with Republic aid. In 4,015 BBY, the Great Droid Revolution on Coruscant was defeated but sparked an increased anti-droid sentiment among the galactic populace. During the Great Sith War, the Krath and their Mandalorian allies attacked several Core Worlds including Basilisk, Foerost, Kaikielius and Coruscant. Following the devastation of Ossus in 3,996 BBY, the Jedi Council took up residence in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, to which many Jedi relics from Ossus were taken. The Temple was greatly expanded and rebuilt over the preceding millennia.[5]

Much of the Core Worlds largely escaped the devastation of the Mandalorian Wars, the Jedi Civil War and the Sith Civil War since most of the fighting occurred in the outer galaxy. In 3,962 BBY, the Mandalorians devastated much of Duro.[5] During the Great Galactic War, the resurgent Sith Empire and their Mandalorian allies blockaded the Hydian Way; depriving the Core Worlds of vital supplies and raw goods from the Colonies and Outer Rim. This sparked rioting on Coruscant and there was talk in the Senate of complete surrender to the Sith. However, the Republic’s situation was alleviated by the intervention of the Mirialan smuggler Hylo Visz who succeeded in breaking the Mandalorian blockade. [9] The Sith then offered to negotiate a peace with the Republic on Alderaan in 3,653 BBY. With the Republic and Jedi caught off guard, a Sith fleet invaded and rampaged the galactic capital; inflicting much damage to the Galactic Senate and Jedi Temple. The Republic was forced to signed the uneven Treaty of Coruscant which ceded territories to the Sith. This set the stage for the Cold War which was marked by border skirmishes and proxy wars.[10]

In 3,017 BBY, Coruscant won the Seventeenth Alsakan Conflict, ending a long line of conflicts with its rival Alsakan. This sealed Coruscant’s dominance as the galaxy’s political and economic center with a monopoly on sponsoring colonization and settlement of outlying systems.[5] In 3,000 BBY, Corellia Star Drive was bought over by Corellian Engineering Corporation following the death of its design team.[11]

By 1,100 BBY, the Republic had entered a "Dark Age" after centuries of protracted warfare with various Sith factions including the New Sith Empire. This period was marked by excessive corruption, corporate bankruptcy, rampant lawlessness and the exhaustion of mineral reserves. The Republic could no longer afford to maintain the HoloNet beyond the Core Worlds, so communications between worlds outside the Core had to be maintained through couriers. Even worse, a galaxywide epidemic of Candorian plague killed off as much as two-thirds of the population of some worlds. The Jedi wielded greater influence in the Republic government and took control of the office of Supreme Chancellor.[2] Although the unity of the Sith seems to have been broken by infighting, the situation wore down the Republic Navy and Army, which likewise fell under increasing Jedi control. During the Light and Darkness War (1,010 BBY—1,000 BBY), Lord Kaan’s reorganized Brotherhood of Darkness struck deep into the Core and managed to capture Corulag, Chandrila and Brentaal IV but failed to take the galactic capital Coruscant.[12]

Redemption

Following the Seventh Battle of Ruusan, Tarsus Valorum—the first non-Jedi Supreme Chancellor in centuries—enacted the Ruusan Reformation that reduced the power of the Chancellor, increased the Galactic Senate’s power and abolished the Republic’s military. The Ruusan Reformation also attempted to reduce corruption and decentralize power away from a few powerful Coreward sectors that dominate representation by reorganizing the then-existing millions of sectors into only 1,024 sectors. Each of the new sectors was granted its own Senator, although a few exemptions were made for politically powerful core worlds to retain their individual representation. Other slots, such as those for species types and cultural entities were also granted. By increasing the power of the Senate however, this increased gridlock and the loss of representation for many worlds and systems.[5]

The subsequent Republic Classic Era was marked by the lack of full-scale conflict in the region which largely recovered and prospered. However, small short-lived conflicts and threats still occurred.[5] Circa 500 BBY, Corellia allied with Selonia and Drall in a failed attempt to conquer the Federation of the Double Worlds.[13] In 470 BBY, Corellia attempted to secede from the Republic; although progressing far enough to close its sector's borders and withdraw from the Senate using Contemplanys Hermi, the plan ultimately failed and the system continued as a begrudging Republic member-state.[2] In 380 BBY, the Corellian Jedi Keiran Halcyon defeated the Afarathu pirates, a sect of Selonian terrorists, whom were trying to kill all Humans on Corellia.[14] The Afarathu were not gone forever, and would plague Corellia during the Galactic Civil War.[15]In 312 BBY, the Corellian King Berethron e Solo established a parliamentary constitutional monarch, replacing his own absolute monarchy.[16] In 150 BBY, the Royal House of Solo was overthrown by Corellia’s powerful conglomerates including Gowix Computers, the Corellian Mining Corporation and the Corellian Engineering Cooperation which then proceeded to install a pro-business government known as the Diktat.[5]

At some point before 33 BBY but probably well after 1,006 BBY, several Human inhabitants of the Core Worlds decided that the urban sprawl of their region, the stress of urban society and the lack of peaceful coexistence with others was not for them. They decided to settle Leritor, an unimportant world in the Mid Rim near the Corellian Run. [17]In 33 BBY, the terrorist organization The Flail, accusing the Galactic Senate of corruption, disrupted public services of Coruscant, including commerce, communications, traffic and weather, destroying property and lives while doing so. They were stopped by agents of Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, a distant descendant of Tarsus Valorum. [18]

Following the Naboo crisis in 32 BBY, the secret Sith Lord and Naboo Senator Palpatine became Supreme Chancellor.[19] In 27 BBY, Coruscant was almost destroyed by Ashaar Khorda using the Infant of Shaa. Jango Fett, Zam Wesell, and Yarael Poof saved Coruscant, although Poof sacrificed himself to do so. News of this averted disaster was never widely divulged, however. By 23 BBY, the stability of the Core Worlds was threatened by the successes of Count Dooku's Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Senate was divided between supporters and opponents of the Military Creation Act. While most of the Core Worlds remained firmly loyal to the Republic, the Separatists found support in the various outlying worlds and sectors of the Expansion Region, the Mid Rim and the Outer Rim. The secession of Republic worlds like Ando and Sy Myrth resulted in a mass exodus of Aqualish and Sy Myrthians from Coruscant. In response to growing tensions, the Corellian Sector under Senator Garm Bel Iblis declared neutrality and temporarily left the Republic, yet again invoking Contemplanys Hermi.[2]

Throughout the Clone Wars, Coruscant and other Core Worlds were subject to frequent Separatist terrorist acts, assassinations and military campaigns. During the Dark Reaper Crisis in 21 BBY, Separatist forces under Sev'rance Tann destroyed the planet’s geothermal generators, disrupting the region’s power supply. [2]Separatist uprisings on Brentaal IV and Esseles were quickly suppressed by Republic and Jedi forces.[2]Coruscant itself was raided [20]while several prominent Republic officials including former Chancellor Finis Valorum[21] and Senator Viento were assassinated by Separatist agents[22]. That year, the Fourth Constitutional Amendment gave Republic worlds in the Core, Colonies, and Inner Rim more voting power than worlds in the Expansion Region and beyond.[5]

During the Foerost campaign in 20 BBY, Separatist commander Dua Ningo’s Bulwark Fleet smashed through the Republic blockade at Foerost and devastated several key Republic outposts throughout the strategically-important Sector Zero. In response, the Republic launched the Victory Fleet— led by Captains Jan Dodonna and Terrinald Screed, and consisting of the newly developed Victory I-class Star Destroyers. The two fleets clashed at Ixtlar, Alsakan and Basilisk which culminated in the defeat of Ningo’s forces at Anaxes. For his efforts, Screed was placed in charge of the Coruscant Home Fleet.[5] However, General Grievous’s forces succeed in capturing the Core Worlds of Kaikielius and Duro during Operation Durge's Lance.[8]Grievous' forces also orbitally bombarded and depopulated Humbarine and unleashed the Loedorvian Brain Plague that exterminated all humans in the Weemell Sector.[23]

In 19 BBY, Republic forces under Jedi Masters Saesee Tiin and Plo Koon recaptured the strategically important world of Rendili which allowed Coruscant to seize control of the Rendili Home Fleet. This and another string of victories at Duro, Commenor and Balmorra in the Colonies turned the tide of the war in the Republic’s favor, forcing the Separatist fleet to retreat to the Mid and Outer Rim Territories. [2]The Republic’s capital became increasingly fortified and the humanocentric COMPOR succeeded in pressuring the Coruscant government into deporting all members of species whose homeworld had joined the Confederacy.

Despite the numerous precautions taken, the Confederacy succeeded in making a surprise raid on Coruscant. Bypassing the heavily fortified Corellian Sector by use of secret hyperspace routes through the Deep Core provided by Darth Sidious, a Separatist fleet under General Grievous attacked Coruscant. With the Republic and Jedi defenders preoccupied, Grievous and his elite MagnaGuards captured Palpatine. However, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi succeeded in rescuing the Supreme Chancellor from the infamous Separatist flagship Invisible Hand. The battle eventually turned in the Republic's favor and the Separatist armada was forced into a full retreat. [5]

At the conclusion of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY, the Republic was reorganized into the Galactic Empire. [24]Due to its strategic location and economic power base, the Core became a key Imperial stronghold. Following Emperor Palpatine's Declaration of a New Order, Coruscant was renamed the Imperial Center. Most key Human-dominated Core Worlds including Coruscant, Kuat and Anaxes that loyally supported the Republic’s war effort during the Clone Wars transferred this support to the Empire. During the Imperial period, the Republic’s unofficial policy of humanocentrism became law with the Empire’s promotion of Human High Culture. [1] Non-human species on Coruscant were forced to live in segregated ethnic neighborhoods while various alien homeworlds in the Core including New Plympto, Orooturoo and Caamas were subject to Imperial atrocities. [5]Following a prolonged resistance on pro-Separatist New Plympto led by the Purge survivor Dass Jennir, the Nosaurians were brutally subjugated and enslaved, being treated as little more than animals.[25].In retaliation to Caamasi opposition to Imperial policies, Palpatine ordered the bombardment of Caamas in 19 BBY. Bothan agents sabotaged the planetary shields while the Imperial fleet leveled the planet’s surface; destroying much of the natural environment and forcing the species offworld. [1]

Several notable Imperial figures including Supreme Commander Gilad Pellaeon, Imperial Intelligence Director Ysanne Isard, and Governor Wilek Nereus and Commander Nahdonnis Praji [8] came from various Core Worlds. However, the region was also home to several prominent opponents of the Galactic Empire. The founders of the Alliance to Restore the Republic Senators Mon Mothma and Bail Organa were from Chandrila and Alderaan respectively as was the former Corellian senator Garm Bel Iblis. [1] Other prominent Alliance figures from the Core Worlds included future New Republic Chief of State Leia Organa, the Corellians Han Solo, Crix Madine and Wedge Antilles,and the former Republic Navy Captain Jan Dodonna . [1]

During the Galactic Civil War, pro-Imperial factions began to infiltrate Ralltiir's financial system and steer its markets in favor of the Empire. This included erasing the fiscal records of alien investors. Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, Rebel sympathizers within the Ralltiiri High Council tried to stop this and restore balance to the markets. In response, an Imperial force under Lord Tion invaded the planet. [26]Imperial forces then disbanded the High Council, placed the planet under military occupation and interned its population in camps.[1] Tion also sealed off the entire Ralltiir system (not even permitting relief organizations to travel through his blockade), severely damaging commerce along the Perlemian.[4]

In 0 BBY, Leia Organa went on a mercy mission to deliver medical supplies and equipment to the Raltiiri High Council. She was permitted to land by Tion himself. There, Leia rescued a wounded Rebel soldier, who later revealed the existence of the first Death Star.[27]Shortly later, the Death Star under the command of Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin destroyed the prominent Core world of Alderaan; killing billions and prompting many outraged sentients to support the Rebel Alliance. Shortly afterwards, the Death Star was destroyed at the Battle of Yavin. [28]In 0 ABY, the Corellian capital Coronet City was the site of a heated skirmish between Imperial forces and elements of the Alliance including the elite Rogue Squadron whom succeeded in rescuing the former Storm Commando Madine from Imperial custody.[29]

In 3 ABY, a Rebel team led by Leia infiltrated Coruscant in an attempt to solicit the Falleen Black Sun leader Prince Xizor’s assistance in uncovering the assassins who were targeting Alliance leader Luke Skywalker. However, this proved to be a trap and Skywalker hatched a plot to rescue the Alliance delegates. In the ensuing skirmish, Xizor’s palace was destroyed and the Prince himself met his demise at the hands of Vader whose flagship Executor obliterated Xizor’s skyhook.[30] Taking advantage of the chaos, the traitorous Grand Admiral Demetrius Zaarin attempted a coup against the two Sith Lords but was eliminated by loyalist Imperial forces.[1]

Redemption

During the late stages of the Galactic Civil War, the Core Worlds switched hands several times between the New Republic and the Empire. With the death of the Emperor and Darth Vader during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the region was carved up by various Imperial warlords. Coruscant was the site of a shortlived anti-Imperial uprising which was suppressed by Imperial forces under the Grand Vizier Sate Pestage and Isard. While the former assumed control of the galactic capital, he was challenged by the Imperial Ruling Council which was secretly manipulated by Isard. In 5 ABY, the Alliance's successor state the New Republic captured Ralltiir, Esseles and Brentaal, the latter an influential Core World near Chandrila. Isard manipulated Pestage into losing strategically-important Brentaal to the New Republic as a means of undermining the latter's position in power.[1]

When Pestage's secret negotiations with the New Republic to cede Coruscant in exchange for an independent fiefdom in the Outer Rim became public, the Ruling Council used this as an opportunity to seize control of Coruscant. Pestage was incarcerated by local Imperial authorities on Ciutric IV; prompting the New Republic to attempt a rescue operation to encourage more defections. This attempt failed and Pestage was murdered by the warlord Admiral Krennel, who then took over Pestage's fiefdom. Meanwhile, Isard liquadated the entire Ruling Council and took over control of Coruscant; turning the capital into a fortress world against the advancing New Republic by fortifying it with Imperial reinforcements.[1]

In 6 ABY, Coruscant fell to Republic forces without intense fighting after Alliance agents sabotaged the planet's shield generators. However, Isard had disappeared and infected the capital's alien populations with the deadly Krytos virus as a means of stirring tensions between humans and aliens. While the Republic managed to treat the virus with shipments of bacta from Thyferra following the Bacta War, interspecies tensions remained rife. Later, Isard escaped Coruscant on the Executor-class Star Destroyer, which doubled as a private prison buried beneath layers of urban sprawl. The event generated earthquakes which killed millions.[1]

In 9 ABY, Grand Admiral Thrawn's forces seeding the space surrounding Coruscant with cloaked asteroids; effectively blockading the New Republic capital by disrupting space traffic and preventing the planetary defense forces from lowering the world's shield generators. With Thrawn's death, the blockade was ended. With the defeat of the Imperial warlord Krennel's forces, the New Republic deployed the majority of its Core-based naval units into the Outer Rim, leaving the strategically important region undefended.[1]

In 10 ABY, after Grand Admiral Thrawn was assassinated during the Battle of Bilbringi, the Imperial Ruling Council under Ars Dangor's leadership gathered Imperial warlords to organize a brutal blitzkrieg that recaptured several key systems in the Core Worlds with days. Ralltiir, Chandrila, Duro, Kaikielius, Esseles, and Metellos were quickly taken over by the Imperial forces. A sizeable Imperial armada bombarded Coruscant, forcing Chief of State Mon Mothma to evacuate the capital's population and relocate the New Republic to the Outer Rim. The Empire invaded the galactic capital and the Ruling Council summoned the political leaders and military commanders of the Empire to restore Imperial government. However, the Empire fell into a civil war that devastated Coruscant and caused widespread destruction in the Empire. After several months of infighting between rival Imperial fleets and armies, Emperor Palpatine returned to conquer the galaxy. Following his first death during the Battle of Endor, Palpatine was reincarnated in a clone body at his secret throneworld of Byss in the remote Deep Core. Having regained the Core Worlds, Palpatine was able to launch Operation Shadow Hand which targeted various "rebellious worlds" such as Dac, Balmorra and Da Soocha V.[1] During Operation Shadow Hand, Admiral Sander Delvardus commenced orbital bombardment during the Second Battle of Metellos, killing five billion inhabitants of the planet.[4]

With his final death in 11 ABY, the New Republic reclaimed most of the Core while the Empire was pushed backed to the Deep Core and eight regions in the Outer Rim, that became collectively known as the Imperial Remnant. The term "Imperial Core", or sometimes even simply "the Core", was used by supporters of both sides to denote areas of remaining Imperial control around the Galactic Center. This usage persisted even when Coruscant and most of the historic Core Worlds had joined under New Republic, and the Imperial holdouts in the area were mostly restricted to the Deep Core and the fringes of the Unknown Regions.

Until 25 ABY, the Core Worlds remained largely stable and prosperous except for brief minor disturbances like the First Corellian Insurrection and the Second Imperium Crisis. During the Black Fleet Crisis (16—17 ABY), the New Republic Fifth Fleet was deployed against the xenophobic Yevethan Dushkan League which perpetuated genocide in the Koornacht Cluster. In 17 ABY, the Senate Hall on Coruscant was bombed during the Almanian Uprising; killing and wounding many senators. Core-based Republic forces were also deployed against the Deep Core warlords.[1]

During the First Corellian Insurrection in 18 ABY, the Saccorian Triad attempted to secede the Corellian Sector by supporting various separatist factions in the Corellian system and then kidnapping a Republic delegation led by Chief of State Leia. However, one of these groups—the extremist Human League led by Thrackan Sal-Solo turned on their Triad bosses by using Centerpoint Station to generate an interdiction field that blocked all travel to and from the system. The Sacorrian Triad used Centerpoint to destroy three planetary systems in the Core including Bovo Yagen.[1]

Tensions between the Human League and its Sacorrian backers reached a climax when Thrackan attempted to secede the Sector with himself as leader. Deactivating the interdiction field, the Sacorrians deployed a war fleet which was by Bakuran and New Republic forces during the Battle of Centerpoint Station. With this defeat, the New Republic reasserted control over the Corellian Sector and apprehended the rebels. To alleviate tensions between the region and the Coruscant government, the Drall Marcha was appointed the sector's new Governor-General. However, many Corellians still yearned for independence and resented New Republic intervention. Despite the normalization of foreign relations and trade with the Imperial Remnant in 19 ABY, the Republic still faced resistance from splinter factions like the Second Imperium which raided Coruscant for supplies and recruits in 23 ABY. [1]
Yuuzhan Vong War

During the Yuuzhan Vong War (25-30 ABY), the Core Worlds were an important target for the extra-galactic Yuuzhan Vong in their path for galactic domination. Since Yuuzhan Vong advances were initially concentrated in the outlying Outer Rim, the Core Worlds were reluctant to commit resources and indifferent to the plight of outlying worlds. In 26 ABY, this changed with further Yuuzhan Vong advances into the Mid Rim, Expansion Region, Hutt Space, the Inner Rim and an ill-fated strike on Fondor in the nearby Colonies. Under the auspices of the Senate Select Committee for Refugees, billions of displaced refugees were relocated to Duro which was believed to be safe from further enemy incursions. [2]

However, the new Warmaster Tsavong Lah ordered a change in battle plans and the planet was attacked by a massive Yuuzhan Vong fleet which destroyed the planet’s orbital cities and killed many refugees. In an attempt to stir anti-Jedi sentiment, the Yuuzhan Vong offered to cease their invasion in exchange for all Jedi being handed over to the invaders. Several prominent Core Worlds politicians including Senator Viqi Shesh and Corellian Governor-General Thrackan Sal-Solo covertly collaborated with the invaders. Following their success at Duro, Yuuzhan Vong forces seized New Plympto and Talfaglio in the Corellian sector in 27 ABY [2], followed by Ralltiir, Kuat and Kaikielius.

On New Plympto, they were opposed by a resistance army led by the Twi’lek Jedi sisters Alema and Numa Rar. In response, the Yuuzhan Vong occupiers depopulated the planet with a virus. In response to New Republic resistance, the Yuuzhan Vong attempted to execute refugees in Talfaglio but were thwarted by a Jedi raid. In response, the invaders attacked the galactic capital Coruscant with a massive fleet. During the subsequent battle, both sides sustained massive casualties and the Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya was slain. [2]

The Yuuzhan Vong then proceeded to terraform Coruscant in the image of their primeval homeworld of Yuuzhan'tar. They introduced exotic species from their home galaxy, altered much of the planet’s landmarks and even altered its climate by using dovin basals to shift it closer to Coruscant Prime. Much of the former cityscape was covered in vegetation while one of its moons was destroyed to create a large asteroid field known as the Rainbow Bridge. Thus, Coruscant became the center of the new Yuuzhan Vong Empire. Similar projects were undertaken on Duro which was transformed into a lush forested world; reversing millennia of pollution and neglect. [2]

In 29 ABY, the New Republic’s successor state—the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances retook Coruscant following a massive battle that saw the demise of the Yuuzhan Vong Supreme Overlord Shimrra and a class uprising among the lowly Worker caste and Shamed Ones inspired by the nascent Jeedai heresy. The Yuuzhan Vong were relocated to the sentient world of Zonama Sekot—a seed of the original Yuuzhan'tar. With the recapture of Coruscant and the reversal of the terraforming processes, Coruscant once again assumed its role as the galactic capitalIn 27 ABY. [2]
Legacy era

Following its reconstruction, Coruscant again became the galactic capital while the Core Worlds gradually recovered its former economic and cultural power. On Duro, Yuuzhan Vong terraforming efforts succeeded in restoring a lush, habitable environment.[4] During the Second Galactic Civil War, peace and recovery efforts were hampered by fighting between the Alliance and the secessionist Confederation led by the Corellian system and the Bothans. In 40 ABY, Chief of State Cal Omas was overthrown by the former Jedi-turned Sith Lord Jacen Solo and Cha Niathal which divided the Alliance further into factions loyal to Jacen and the opposition Jedi Coalition. With the end of fighting in 41 ABY, former Imperial admiral Natasi Daala became the new Chief of State though the Core Worlds remained divided between the Alliance and Confederation. [5]

Prior to the Sith-Imperial War, the Galactic Alliance and the Fel Empire signed a treaty on Anaxes where the two would defend each other in the events of threat from aggressive powers. Following the sabotage of the Ossus Project, the Fel Empire took advantage of rampant anti-Vong sentiment to invoke war on the Galactic Alliance.[31] Within three years, much of the Core including Coruscant passed into the hands of the Fel Empire under Roan Fel which was usurped by Darth Krayt's Sith Empire in 130 ABY. [5]The now lush world of Duro became an Imperial stronghold and was the site of the Imperial Naval Academy where the most talented Duros instructed Imperial pilots and capital ship crewmen.[32]

As of 137 ABY, resistance to the Sith-led Empire in the Core Worlds continued in the form of the Alliance's Core Forces under Admiral Gar Stazi throughout the Second Imperial Civil War.[5] While much of the fighting occurred in the Outer Rim, the Temple of the Sith on Coruscant was raided by the former Jedi Cade Skywalker. Later, a joint Galactic Alliance and Fel Empire fleet attacked Ralltiir and decimated the Coruscant Third Fleet; forcing the Sith Empire to divert more forces to defend the strategically important Core world.[33]

Colonies

The Colonies, also known as the Colonies Regions, was the name given to a region of the galaxy between the Core Worlds and the Inner Rim Territories. Due to its close proximity to the galaxy’s economic and political powerhouse the Core Worlds, the Colonies was a largely wealthy region consisting of booming industrial worlds, trade centers and garden worlds.

The planets of the Colonies were among the first areas outside the Core to be colonized, some before the establishment of the Galactic Republic, and many worlds in the Colonies were founding members. The worlds here were typically heavily populated, industrialized, and had cultures as well established as the Core Worlds.[1] The planets in the Colonies were extremely wealthy and highly developed, and could be referred to as export powerhouses. Many produced vast amounts of raw materials, particularly food and metals for the production of droids, starships, and military vehicles. Mining operations would often leave entire planets ravaged and bare.


Circa 27,000 BBY, the Gossam of Castell developed the tumble hyperdrive which allowed them to colonize several distant worlds including Felucia in the Outer Rim. Most worlds in the Colonies section of "the Slice" were colonized by 24,000 BBY. During the late Pre-Republic Era, several wealthy Core worlds in the Arrowhead colonized various worlds in this region through the use of generation ships and carved up interstellar empires. Settlers from Humbarine colonized Balmorra and Commenor while the Corellians colonized Byblos and Loronar. The Duros colonists settled on Neimoidia and gradually evolved into a separate sub-species known as the Neimoidians by 15,000 BBY. Due to slow hyperspace travel and lack of communication, these colony worlds broke away from their colonial masters which sparked some conflict. [2]

The formation of the Galactic Republic in 25,000 BBY helped minimize conflict between the Core and break-away Colony worlds, and expand colonization efforts within the region. This was greatly aided by the discovery of the Corellian Run and Perlemian Trade Routes which led to the establishment of several new colony worlds including the shipyard base of Loronar, the Yabol Opa, Raithal, Arkania and the agrarian worlds of the Delle system.[2] By 22,000 BBY, the Duros on Neimoidia had established a few colony worlds known as the "purse worlds". One of these worlds Cato Neimoidia joined the Republic that year.

In 50 BBY, the Arkanian Revolution occurred in Arkanian space when a non-interventionist faction rebelled against the radical geneticist Arkanian Dominion. The revolutionaries amassed an army of cyborgs created from merging the body parts of various species. However, the Dominion appealed to help from the Jedi Order and the revolution was brutally put down. However, some of their cyborg creations survived including the bounty hunter Gorm the Dissolver.[3]

Ten years before the Invasion of Naboo, the Commerce Guild took advantage of an economic recession on Castell to take control of the planet. One Gossam named Shu Mai used her aggressive business tactics buy back Castell and gradually became the Guild's president.[4] Mai had each able Gossam serve as an indentured servant of the Commerce Guild for a portion of their lives in return for food, housing and a modest income. Gradually, Castell recovered from the recession but came under the influence for the Commerce Guild which subsequently joined the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Separatist Crisis and Clone Wars. [5]


During the Clone Wars, the Neimoidia and the "purse worlds" were battlegrounds between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems towards the end of the war in 19 BBY.[3]Under Emperor Palpatine's reign, the Galactic Empire was very forceful in controlling the Colonies particularly developing a hardline policy towards species and worlds that had supported the Confederacy. The Gossam species of Castell were a primary target of the Empire's humanocentric policies.[5] Consequently, the Alliance to Restore the Republic and its successor state the New Republic gained support in the region.[2] As part of its invasion of the Core Worlds from 5 ABY to 6 ABY, the Republic secured several undeveloped Colonies worlds as stepping stones.[1] Following the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the Gossam were liberated from Imperial rule. [5]

The Inner Rim

The Inner Rim, also called the Inner Rim Planets, Inner Rim Territories, or the Inner Sphere, was a region of the galaxy between the Colonies and the Expansion Region.

The Inner Rim was originally just called "the Rim" when first settled by the Galactic Republic in 20,100 BBY during the Great Manifest Period. It was expected to be the farthest extent of the known Galaxy for centuries, but the Expanded Rim (later renamed the Expansion Region) was opened within a hundred years of the Inner Rim. Due to their closer proximity to the hub of galactic civilization in the Core Worlds, Inner Rimmers gradually developed a condescending attitude towards those of the "outer galaxy" but were looked down upon by the inhabitants of the Core and Colonies. [1]

During the Pre-Republic Era, several worlds in the region including Denon and Manaan were ruled by the Rakatan Infinite Empire which contained various worlds across the Galaxy. [1] Between 5,200 BBY to 4,600 BBY, the jungle world of Onderon was settled by shipwrecked human colonists who established a civilization centered on the city of Iziz. [1] In 4,400 BBY, the planet was taken over by the Dark Jedi Freedon Nadd who established a Dark Side theocracy. The Naddists expelled dissidents into the wilds of Onderon who established a new civilization known as the Beast Riders. In 4,000 BBY, a Jedi mission led by Ulic Qel-Droma teamed up with the Beast Riders to overthrow the Naddists; ending the centuries-long Beast Wars. [2]

In 3,996 BBY during the Great Sith War, Mandalorian forces invaded Onderon but were decimated by Republic reinforcements while their leader Mandalore the Ultimate met his demise on the jungle moon of Dxun. [3] For much of the Jedi Civil War, the Selkath of Manaan maintained a state of neutrality and supplied the therapeutic kolto to both the Republic and Darth Malak’s Sith Empire. [4] With the decline of the kolto market and the destruction of its surface cities during the Great Galactic War, Manaan slipped into primitive decline. [5]

In 22 BBY, several Inner Rim worlds including the Givin homeworld of Yag'Dhul joined Count Dooku’s Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Separatist Crisis. The Gotal homeworld of Antar 4 was the site of fighting between the pro-Republic Antarian Rangers and the Separatist. The fallout from the deployment of the electro-magnetic pulse weapon that incapacitated many Gotals prompted thousands of worlds to secede and join the Confederacy. [6]During the Clone Wars in 21 BBY, the Fourth Constitutional Amendment gave Republic worlds in the Core, Colonies, and Inner Rim more voting power than worlds in the Expansion Region and beyond. During the reign of Palpatine, the Galactic Empire ruthlessly controlled the Inner Rim. Rather than rebel, many residents chose to flee to the Outer Rim Territories. In 6 ABY, the Dark Jedi warlord Shadowspawn waged a dogged and savage campaign against New Republic forces on Mindor. [6] In 7 ABY, Thyferra was the site of fighting between Ysanne Isard’s Imperial faction and Rogue Squadron over control of the production and supply of therapeutic bacta. [2] Due to the entrenched Imperial presence, much of the region was held by the Empire until as late as 9 ABY. Subsequently, many Inner Rimmers later resented the New Republic's sluggishness in liberating the region. Many worlds, despite joining the New Republic, were openly afraid that the government was not strong enough to maintain power. [1]

Their concerns were borne out following the return of Palpatine in 10 ABY during Operation Shadow Hand. Following the deployment of the world-destroying Galaxy Gun against several Republic targets, the clone incarnation of Palpatine reclaimed most of the Inner Rim. With the final demise of Palpatine during the Battle of Onderon in 11 ABY, much of the region quickly fell back under the New Republic’s control. By the end of the Galactic Civil War in 19 ABY, the remnants of the Empire had been driven into eight barren sectors in the Outer Rim. [2]

During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Ailon Nova Guard joined forces with the Yuuzhan Vong invaders in conquering several Inner Rim worlds including Cona, Manaan and Zeltros. [7] However, the invaders suffered a substantial setback at the Battle of Yag'Dhul. Following the cessation of conflict in 30 ABY, the Republic’s successor state the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances temporarily established its capital on Denon until reconstruction concluded on the devastated galactic capital Coruscant. Expansion Region

The Expansion Region, first known as the Expansion Rim, was located between the Inner Rim Territories and the Mid Rim in the galaxy.

The region was an experiment in corporate-controlled worlds settled during the Galactic Republic's Great Manifest Period beginning in 20,000 BBY. Unrelenting exploitation by Corellian and Duros/Neimoidian corporate interests of the worlds of the Corellian Run had impoverished countless native species and contributed to environmental despoliation. Galactic colonization was forced to shift farther eastward towards the Perlemian Trade Route. [1]

Looking for untapped resource-rich worlds, the two galactic powerhouses Alsakan and Coruscant sponsored the exploration and settlement of the future Expansion Region. Competing economic interests between Alsakan and Coruscant led to the First Alsakan Conflict in 17,000 BBY which ended the economic boom of the Great Manifest period. Over the following millennia, the competing holdings of both worlds fought seventeen "Alsakan Conflicts" in the Region. The conflicts devastated many Alsakan colonies while slavery boomed due to the entry of Hutt, Trandoshan and Bothan slavers. [1]

Only the Corellian Run escaped the conflict due to the strong presence of Corellian military warships which precipitated further colonization west of the Run. Gradually, the western portion on the region became a mixture of prosperous agrarian, industrial and trading worlds known collectively as the Trailing Sectors. The widespread prosperity of this region funded Coruscant’s colonization of the Mid Rim worlds. [1]

The Brentaal League extended its hyperlanes into the Region in 4,020 BBY. The last conflict ended in Coruscant’s favor in 3,017 BBY and sealed its monopoly over galactic colonization efforts in the preceding millennia. For another millennia, the eastern Slice sectors recovered but were devastated by the New Sith Wars and the Candorian plague during the Draggulch Period (2,000—1,000 BBY. Many colonies were abandoned as the Republic retreated into the Core Worlds. [1]

Following the Ruusan Reformations, the Republic granted a conglomerate of powerful corporations known as the Expansionist Oligarchy control of the Outer Expansion Zone. These corporations exploited and profited heavily from the raw materials, metals and ores of many worlds. While profits were enormous for these corporations, the region was plagued by internal strife and disturbances. Inhabitants were oppressed while the corporations stripped entire stellar systems of all their resources. Because they controlled communications and transportation to, from, and across the region, very few people knew what was going on in the Expansion Region. [1]

With civil unrest spreading from system to system, the Republic eventually took control of the Region due to mounting pressure from its denizens by limiting or evicting corporate interests. Though most of those corporations moved on to the Corporate Sector in 490 BBY, Expansion Region worlds were still producers of raw materials and ores. However, most natural resources were exhausted. [1]

During the Imperial Period, the Galactic Empire attempted to revive the Slice sectors by developing several key regional centers like Gyndine, Bacrana and Cyrillia into depot stations for civilian and military fleets and encouraging colonization of surrounding systems by corporations and laborers. The Corporate Sector Authority also aided in the development of several subsectors and controlled the Enarc Run until the Battle of Endor. [1]

During the Galactic Civil War, the Rebel Alliance established several bases on depopulated systems. Following the withdrawal of Imperial forces to the Outer Rim Territories following the collapse of Operation Shadow Hand, the Alliance’s successor state the New Republic tried rebuilding the region but was interrupted by the Yuuzhan Vong War. Though Yuuzhan Vong agents succeeded in stirring conflict between Osarian and Rhommamool along the Corellian Run, much of the region escaped the war. [1]

Mid Rim

The Mid Rim, also known as the Mid-Rim, Mid-systems or the Mid Rim Territories, was a region of the galaxy located between the Expansion Region and the Outer Rim Territories. With fewer natural resources—and therefore a smaller population—than many neighboring regions, the Mid Rim was a territory where residents worked hard for everything they had. Several planets built up impressive economies, and pirate raiders often hid in the relatively unexplored spaces far from major trade routes.

The Mid Rim was comprised of over 160 sectors, and a region of free-standing subsectors on its southwestern flanks.[1]
History
Early Beginnings

During the Pre-Republic Era, the Wookiees of Kashyyyk were ruled by the galactic-spanning Infinite Empire of the Rakata who terraformed the planet’s surface for agricultural purposes. The collapse of their empire left the terraforming machines unattended which resulted in the planet’s abnormally large foliage. The Hutt Empire encompassed a number of Mid Rim worlds including Nal Hutta and Nar Shaddaa.[2]However, the Bothans were able to resist Hutt expansion and carve up their own independent region of space which evolved into Bothan Space.[3]

The Mid Rim politically developed as a consequence of a colonization boom in the Expansion Region during the Great Manifest Period (20,000—17,000 BBY). Profits from business ventures in the Expansion Region prompted several Inner Rim political systems and religious organizations to colonize and develop the worlds in the Mid Rim's portion of the Slice. This colonization boom attracted few corporations which chose to remain in the Expansion Region due to the region's business friendly policies. Over the following millennia, colonization in the Mid Rim developed at a progressive albeit leisurely pace which provided successive generations of colonists with ample space to expand into. Due to the stronger presence of central government from Coruscant, there was less criminal activity in the region compared to the more distant Outer Rim Territories. The crime-dominated Hutt Space bordered the eastern fringes of the Mid Rim.[3]

Around 15,000 BBY, the factious Aqualish were discovered by the Galactic Republic following a violent first-encounter which led to the Aqualish-Republic War.[4] Subsequently, the Aqualish joined the Republic after agreeing to abide by Republic law. In 12,000 BBY, Ord Mantell was settled by Corellian colonists as a Republic military outpost. Circa 8,000 BBY, the Republic established an outpost on Malastare which was home to the sapient quadruped Dug species.[4]In 7,000 BBY, the reptilian Trandoshan species of Trandosha joined the Republic.[source?]In 4,020 BBY, Kashyyyk was rediscovered by Czerka Corporation, which renamed the planet "G5-623" and subsequently "Edean".[5]

Circa 4,000 BBY the Mid Rim was known as the Frontier or Galactic Frontier, as it was the limit of the then explored galaxy. Most Mid Rim colony worlds became dependent on low-cost manufacturing and agriculture as the basis of their economies. However, this prosperity attracted the attention of pirates who used unexplored space as a hiding place and staging ground for raids on colonies. This became a problem in the period following the Sith Civil War.[3]

During the Mandalorian Wars, the Mandalorians considered invading Kashyyyk and using it as a training center for their troops but later abandoned such plans. Later, the Wookiee Chuundar seized power as Chieftain from his father Freyyr and banished his own brother Zaalbar. Chuundar actively collaborated with the Czerka Corporation by allowing them to exploit Wookiee slave labour in exchange for weapons. Freyyr went into self-exile to the Shadowlands of Kashyyyk. In 3,956 BBY, Czerka's control of "Edean" was disrupted when the enslaved Wookiee populace, led by Freyyr and the former Jedi Revan, overthrew the local corporate headquarters and drove all outsiders off the planet, save from the Ebon Hawk crew.[5]

Around 3,951 BBY, the Grizmalltian Queen Elsinore den Tasia sponsored an expedition by the Republic explorer Kwilaan who discovered the planet Naboo. The planet became notorious amongst big game hunters who favored the indigenous veermoks, although it would be five decades before permanent Human settlement. Eventually, in approximately 3,900 BBY, Human refugees fleeing a violent revolution on Grizmallt settled in the mountains and great grass plains. Cultural differences between the Human colonists and the indigenous Gungans led to tensions and conflict over the millennia.[2]

In 3,700 BBY, the discovery of the Hydian Way encouraged colonization in the northern and southern arcs of the region. By this time, the region was organized into structured government-zoned settlement districts. Following the Great Galactic War, large portions of the Mid Rim came under the resurgent Sith Empire after the Treaty of Coruscant in 3,653 BBY including loyalist worlds and species like Rodia and the Bothans.[3]

During the New Sith Wars in 1,800 BBY, Republic forces bombed the Ubese homeworld of Uba IV and exterminated all life on Uba I, II and V . This led to the near-extinction of the Ubese species who maintained an everlasting belligerence towards the Republic and the Jedi.[3] Throughout this period, Gap Nine [6] and Almas [7] were the sites of battles between the Republic and various Sith factions. In the Light and Darkness War, the Brotherhood of Darkness invaded Kashyyyk and Trandosha. However, the Trandoshans slaughtered many of the troopers. The Sith retaliated by invading their world and burning the homes of the Trandoshans, leading the surviving Trandoshans to save themselves from death by pledging loyalty to the Brotherhood. In 1,000 BBY, the lush world of Ruusan was the site of seven epic battles which culminated in the destruction of the Brotherhood. Following the campaign, the Republic enacted the Ruusan Reformations which increased the powers of the Galactic Senate while reducing the number of senators.[2]

Circa 1,000 BBY, Malastare was colonized by Gran colonists from Kinyen which resulted in a bloody and violent war. Using their influence in the Senate, the Gran were able to settle the conflict in their favor and established the colonial Gran Protectorate. The native Dugs were demilitarized and resettled on Malastere's western continent where they were exploited by their Gran colonial masters over the millennia. Throughout the last centuries of the Republic, the Gran colonists dominated Malastare.[8][9]

In 32 BBY, Supreme Chancellor Valorum increased taxation of Outer Rim trade routes, prompting the Trade Federation to blockade and occupy Naboo. With the support of the Jedi and the Gungans, the Naboo Queen Padmé Amidala regained control of the planet during the Naboo crisis. Meanwhile, Trandoshan terrorists attempted to assassinate the Wookiee senator Yarua in protest of their homeworld being directly represented in the Senate by Kashyyyk. In 23 BBY, further tensions between the two species led to a Wookiee blockade of Trandosha and peace talks collapsed when it was revealed that the Trandoshans were seeking to obtain representation with Trade Federation backing.

In 22 BBY, the secession of various Republic worlds into Count Dooku’s Confederacy of Independent Systems created a flow of Loyalist refugees from Separatist worlds. The Refugee Relief Movement organized the resettlement of these refugees on ten Mid Rim worlds including Naboo, Kalarba, Monastery, Cerea, Sneeve, Bimmisaari and Durkteel. The Aqualish government on Ando also joined the Separatists but were opposed by the rival Andoan Free Colonies which remained loyal to the Republic. Due to Jedi intervention, the backwater world of Ansion remained within the Republic.[2] Similarly, the Gran Protectorate on Malastare remained loyal to the Republic with its Senator Ask Aak serving on the Loyalist Committee. An organization called Dugs for Democracy opposed the Military Creation Act and fought for the civil rights of Dugs.[10]

During the Clone Wars, control of the Mid Rim fluctuated between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic. The Confederacy took advantage of interspecies rivalry between the Wookiees of Kashyyyk and the Trandoshans by arming Trandoshan commercial raiders on attacks against Republic shipping. In 22 BBY, the Separatist launched their first offensive against Kashyyyk with Trandoshan support but were repulsed by Republic forces. During the Dark Reaper campaign, the Chiss mercenary Sev'rance Tann raided Wookiee colony on Alaris Prime. Due to its vital fuel reserves, Malastare was targeted by Separatist forces but were repulsed by local Dug forces and Republic reinforcements under Jedi General Anakin Skywalker who accidentally awakened the Zillo Beast.[11]

In 21 BBY, Separatist attempts to encourage the planets Junction V, Bezim, Delaluna and Vicondorto secede failed due to Jedi intervention. Republic forces under Anakin Skywalker also captured the Techno Union Foreman Wat Tambor on Metalorn and destroyed the Confederacy’s cortosis battle droid project. In 19.9 BBY, Armand Isard—the Director of the Senate Bureau of Intelligence—deployed mutant stone mites on the backwater world of Orleon in response to rumors of Separatist biolabs. While such rumors were later proven false, the devastation wrought by the stone mites destroyed much of the planet’s infrastructure; prompting the planet’s entire population to emigrate offworld. [2]

In 19 BBY, Separatist forces were repulsed at Azure. Towards the end of the war, most CIS forces were repulsed to the Mid and Outer Rims. Separatist forces also launched a massive invasion of Kashyyyk in an attempt to capture the Claatuvac Guild’s secret archive of hyperspace routes. Republic reinforcements under Jedi Master Yoda crushed the droid army but the Jedi were then targeted for extermination under Order 66. [2] Under the Emperor Palpatine’s new Galactic Empire, Imperial forces invaded Kashyyyk and enslaved the Wookiees with the collaboration of the Trandoshans who profited in the slave trade.[12]
The Empire and Beyond

Following the Declaration of a New Order, a series of Imperial academies were established throughout the Mid Rim. It was heavily patrolled by the Empire, which feared that it was ripe for the Rebellion to set up bases there. The region’s interstellar markets also profited from favorable trading incentives.[3]As the Empire withdrew, the Mid Rim remained one of the few places unquestionably controlled by the Empire. After the Battle of Endor, it housed many hidden Imperial bases and makeshift shipyards. Many rival Moffs maintained "private empires" in this region on the condition that they supply troops and taxes to legitimate Imperial fleets in the region. During the time of the return of Palpatine in 10 ABY, the Mid Rim was still a significant Imperial power base which kept their massive fleets supplied.[3]

In 11 ABY, Palpatine’s final clone body and spirit were destroyed during a battle at Onderon. Following his demise, the Alliance’s successor state the New Republic recaptured much of the Mid Rim. By 19 ABY, the Empire had been pushed out of the Mid Rim into eighteen backwater sectors in the Outer Rim known as the Imperial Remnant. During the Caamas Document crisis, the Bothan capital of Bothawui was the site of fighting between various pro and anti-Bothan factions. With the appearance of Imperial forces, these disparate factions united to defeat a common foe. Shortly afterwards, the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic signed the Bastion Accords which ended the Galactic Civil War.[12]

During the Yuuzhan Vong War , much of the eastern Mid Rim was invaded by the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong. In 25 ABY, Ithor was devastated by a Yuuzhan Vong bioweapon while New Republic and Imperial forces succeeded in evacuating many refugees from Ord Mantell. In 26 ABY, the Yuuzhan Vong conquered and devastated much of the region as part of their campaign to secure the strategic Corellian Run. Several worlds including Sriluur, Druckenwell, Falleen, Ando Prime, Rodia and Ansion were conquered and occupied. Kalarba was destroyed by using the Yo'gand's Core tactic to draw down its moon Hosk Station while Rodian captives were "shaped" into Vagh Rodiek warbeasts. The Yuuzhan Vong also invaded Hutt Space, capturing Nal Hutta and Nar Shaddaa. [2] However, they failed to penetrate the well-defended Bootana Hutta region. The region was also economically wrecked due to the collapse of the local economy and trade routes. A few worlds managed to escape invasion by aligning themselves with the collaborationist Peace Brigade only to be raided by New Republic forces during the later stages of the war.[3]

With the end of the war and the recapture of the galactic capital Coruscant, those Peace Brigade worlds were unpopular with the Galactic Alliance government—the successor state to the Republic. Rejecting foreign aid, the Mid Rimmers managed to rebuild their worlds and establish new trade routes which brought a post-war boom to the region. Meanwhile, the slave-trading Senex and Juvex Sectors encouraged the immigration of refugees.[3]During the Second Galactic Civil War, Bothan Space, Bimmisaari, the Halla Sector and Beris sided with the Corellian-led Confederation against the Galactic Alliance. Following a coup by Darth Caedus, Alliance forces attacked Kashyyyk for sheltering Jedi. Orbital bombardment of Kashyyyk's forests created a firestorm that engulfed much of the planetwide jungle and killed many Wookiees. In response, the Confederation redirected fleets from Kuat in the Core Worlds to help the Wookiees which led to the repulsion of Alliance forces. Despite Condeferation assistance, the Wookiees joined the Jedi Coalition.[13].

Following the Sith-Imperial War in 130 ABY, Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire seized control of much of the Mid Rim and sought to "divide and conquer" the its various worlds and species. Viewing the Wookiees as a potential threat, the Sith Empire did not enslave the entire species as their predecessors but rather isolated Kashyyyk from the rest of the galaxy by destroying all spaceports and shipyards. No Wookiees were allowed to leave or visit Kashyyyk without an Imperial order and HoloNet transmissions to the planet were completely cut off. Supplies and traders still could come and go, after swearing under penalty of death not to provide Wookiees with information of the state of the rest of the galaxy, but the Wookiees themselves were completely isolated and largely left alone. In contrast, other species like the Trandoshans and Rodians prospered economically and militarily as "favored species". The Trandoshans prospered from the redirection of trade to their homeworld while Rodian bounty hunters claimed more Jedi bounties than their rivals.[14]

The Outer Rim Territories

The Outer Rim Territories, simply known as the Outer Rim, were located outside the Mid Rim. The Outer Rim was the least widely settled and explored expanse of the galaxy before Wild Space and the Unknown Regions. The largest region in the galaxy, it was strewn with diverse worlds, and rugged, primitive frontier planets.

History

Pre-Republic era

For much of galactic history, little was known about the history and cultures of the Outer Rim until the formation of the Galactic Republic in 25,053 BBY.[1] During this period, the Gree Enclave reached its apex while the reptilian Kwa developed the Infinity Gates which allowed them to teleport between worlds.[1]Between 30,000 to 25,200 BBY, the far-reaching Rakatan Infinite Empire ruled a number of Outer Rim worlds including Tatooine, Dantooine and Honoghr.[1] By the dawn of the Republic, these civilizations had faded into history and little remained of their former power.[1][2]

Around that period, the worlds of the Tion Cluster were colonized by Human settlers from an ancient Core Worlds sleeper ship.[1] Between 25,130 to 25,100 BBY, the tyrannical Tionese dictator Xim the Despot conquered much of the Tion Cluster including the Livien League. Eventually, his empire stretched from the Radama Void to the Maw.[3][4][1]

However, his incursions into the Si'klaata Cluster brought him into conflict with the growing Hutt Empire.[3][4][1] During the Third Battle of Vontor in 25,100 BBY, Xim was finally defeated by Kossak the Hutt's newly acquired army of Klatooinian, Vodran and Nikto mercenaries.[3][4][1] Xim died a slave in the dungeons of Kossak on Varl, but Tionese history claimed that he was treacherously killed at Vontor.[5] The Tion Cluster split into several competing states including the Honorable Union of Desevro & Tion.[4]
The Old Republic era
The earliest known symbol of the Galactic Republic, dominant government of this period.


Circa. 25,000 BBY, the discovery of the Perlemian Trade Route linked the growing Republic with the Outer Rim world of Ossus, which became the domain of the Jedi Order over the subsequent millennia. Eventually, the Republic began colonizing hundreds of other worlds within the area of Ossus. While the Republic continued to expand in the Core Worlds and the Colonies, Ossus became a fortress world blocking Tionese and Hutt expansion into the Perlemian.[1]

In 24,000 BBY, war broke out between the Republic and the Union; spreading to both sides of the Perlemian. The Republic won by turning the Hutts against the Tionese; ending the Union's existence as an independent state and paving the way for galactic domination by the Core-based Republic.[1] By 23,900 BBY, the worlds of the former Honorable Union had all joined the Republic as a means of protection against the Hutts with the exception of Desevro which remained proudly isolationist.[6]

In 12,000 BBY, the Republic came under the influence of the theocratic and humanocentric Pius Dea sect which posited Contispex as Supreme Chancellor.[1][7] Taking advantage of the unpopularity of the Hutts among the Republic's citizens, Constipex sanctioned a crusade against the Hutts.[7] Over the following centuries, his descendants sanctioned several crusades against some rival alien sects in the Outer Rim which fought back; leaving the galaxy in a never-ending state of alternating hot and cold wars.[7] Though Pius Dea rule came to an end in 11,000 BBY, the repercussions of these crusades would sour relations between the Core and the Outer Rim over the millennia.[1]

Around 10,000 BBY, Vall Kumauri established the short-lived Kumauri Empire in the remote frontier areas of the Outer Rim.[8] At its height, the Kumauri Empire included more than thirty star systems. Eventually, the Republic gained the upper hand in the conflict and re-conquered all the territory he had seized. Kumauri's legacy would live on in the tradition of warship design that culminated in the Cal-class battleship.[8]

At the end of the Hundred-Year Darkness in 6,900 BBY, several Dark Jedi were defeated at Corbos and banished into the uncharted expanses of the Outer Rim.[4][1][9] The Jedi exiles fled to the remote world of Korriban. After conquering it, they interbred with the native Sith species through the art of Sith Alchemy and began a long period of building and expansion. The Sith Empire developed in complete isolation in the Outer Rim for two thousand years before it eventually rediscovered the Republic.[4][1][9]

Under the Sith Lord Naga Sadow, the Empire invaded Republic space in 5,000 BBY, during the Great Hyperspace War, but it was defeated.[10]The Sith Empire was believed to have been destroyed by Republic forces during the Second Battle of Korriban, but in fact survived due to a single Sith Lord who escaped to the Unknown Regions. There, this new Sith Emperor, whose rule lasted for well over a thousand years, rebuilt the Sith Empire in preparation for a Great Galactic War against the Republic.[11]With the Sith threat apparently vanquished, the Republic continued exploring and colonizing worlds in the Outer Rim.[4][1]

In 4,800 BBY, the spice ryll was discovered on the Outer Rim world of Ryloth; home of the humanoid Twi’lek species. However, the Neimoidians seized exclusive distribution rights to the spice and sold them to the newly-discovered Porporite species. Unfortunately, the spice drove them into a homicidal frenzy. Terrified, the Neimoidians hired several Gank mercenaries to protect them. Instead, the Ganks exterminated the Porporites and then embarked on a full scale war against the Republic, but were eventually put down by the Jedi.[1]Around 4,000 BBY, the Mon Calamari and Quarren species of watery Dac were discovered though its inhabitants had already been exploring nearby star systems for several years.[12]

During the Old Republic era, the Outer Rim had several remote, scarcely-populated planets that included expensive resort worlds for rich tourists, ruined settlements and, it was rumored, hideouts for the Black Sun, the Hutts and several outlaws. The Outer Rim Oreworks corporation used its exploratory branch to search useful planets that ORO could settle and exploit.[13]

The explosion of the Cron Cluster and the ensuing supernovae.


During the Great Sith War in 3,996 BBY, the Krath under Aleema Keto destroyed the Republic jump station of Kemplex IX in the Auril sector.[14] Shortly afterward, the Krath and their Jedi pursuers were destroyed in a massive supernova which engulfed the Cron Cluster, a nearby stellar body of ten densely packed stars. The ensuing blast devastated the surface of the ancient Jedi outpost of Ossus and created the Cron Drift.[14]

During the Mandalorian Wars (3,976-3,960 BBY), the Mandalorians chose the Outer Rim to begin their campaign against the Galactic Republic.[1] In 3,976 BBY, the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders under Mandalore the Ultimate embarked on a campaign of conquest along the Outer Rim Territories, on the edge of Republic space.[1] Conquering worlds as varied as Althir and Cathar, the Neo-Crusaders had carved out a clan territory larger that the space ruled by the Hutts in less than a decade. Weakened by the Sith War, the Republic and the Jedi Council refused to intervene at first.[2]

In 3,970 BBY, the Myrialites under Provisional Governor Myrial of Argazda seceded the Kanz sector from the Republic. Myrialite forces invaded worlds in that sector that resisted her rule including Lorrd and Amaltanna. For three hundred years, the her successors ruled the sector as an independent fiefdom known as the Argazdan Redoubt—enslaving many peoples including the Lorrdians. In 3,670 BBY, the "Kanz Disorders" came to an end when Jedi/Republic forces under the Lorrdian Jedi Master Mari-Elan Nora toppled the regime and restored Republic rule to the sector.[4][1]

In 3,963 BBY, the Mandalorians invaded the Galactic Republic proper; forcing the Republic to enter the war. In defiance of the Jedi Council, the Jedi Knights Revan and Malak led the Republic Navy in a fierce counter-offensive against the Neo-Crusaders; winning key battles at Taris, Jaga's Cluster and Althir. During the cataclysmic battle of Malachor V, much of the Mandalorian fleet was destroyed and the planet was fractured to the core. Defeated, the Mandalorians capitulated and destroyed their weapons and armor.

In 3,960 BBY, during the Jedi Civil War, Telos IV was devastated by a Sith fleet under the command of the renegade Jedi—turned—Sith Lord Malak and former Republic Admiral Saul Karath.[2] Later, in 3,956 BBY, Sith forces leveled the surface of Taris; destroying the world-spanning city and killing billions.[2]By 3,950 BBY, much of the Rim had fallen into chaos as a result of infighting amongst the various surviving Sith warlords. Thus, the Republic was able to reclaim much of the Rim that had been under Sith control since the Great Sith War.[1]

In 3,700 BBY, the female pioneer Freia Kallea discovered a new hyperspace route which became known as the Hydian Way.[15] Spanning the width of the galaxy, the Hydian Way ran from the Outer Rim world of Bonadan and continued through the Core Worlds to Eriadu on the other side. The Hydian helped open up much of the galaxy beyond the region known as the Slice, fundamentally altering the scale of galactic civilization.[4][1] As a result, the Republic established new colonies in the Mid Rim and Outer Rim Territories.[4][1]

In 3,681 BBY, the resurgent Sith Empire struck back against the Republic in the Great War.[11] Catching the Republic by surprise, the Sith seized many worlds in the Outer Rim Territories, destroyed the shipyards at Sluis Van and cut off the Rimma Trade Route.[11] The Republic suffered further defeats at Agamar and Utapau, and was constantly harassed over the century.[11]
Large areas of the Outer Rim Territories were ceded to the Sith Empire under the Treaty of Coruscant.

By 3,653 BBY, the Republic had been driven back to the Core Worlds; leaving the Sith in control of much of the Rim.[11] Following the Sacking of Coruscant, the Republic was forced to give up many outlying systems to the Sith in the punitive Treaty of Coruscant.[11] The end of the Great War set the stage for a Cold War between the Sith Empire and the Republic in the years that followed. This cold war saw a number of border skirmishes and proxy wars, pushing the two super powers to the brink of another war.[11]
The New Sith Wars era

In 2,000 BBY, the Republic once more faced the menace of the Sith, who had formed a Sith Empire that was far larger than any of its three predecessors.[1] Over the centuries, the Republic continuously fought various Sith factions across the galaxy including the Rim. The losses for the Republic were so catastrophic that a dark age began in the 1,100 BBY, with widespread social unrest and economic collapse. The collapse of the HoloNet and interstellar commerce precipitated a breakdown in communication and trade between the Core and the Rim.[1]

The Republic itself shrunk to a mere rump state surrounding the Core Worlds, with the Sith Empire encompassing virtually the rest of the entire galaxy. The Jedi took over absolute authority, ruling the remainder of the Republic directly. In 1,000 BBY, the Sith were finally defeated in 1,000 BBY at Ruusan in the Mid Rim although much of the galaxy was left scarred and devastated by the attrition warfare.[1]

Tensions still lingered between inhabitants of the Outer Rim and the Core Worlds due to the former's perceived exploitation by the latter, as in the case of Apatros which was controlled by the Outer Rim Oreworks company.[16] Both the Republic and the Sith sought to exploit the labor and resources of many Rimward worlds.[16] Taking advantage of regional tensions, the Sith enticed many Rim inhabitants into their military forces and the Sith order.[16]

Under the Ruusan Reformations instituted by Supreme Chancellor Tarsus Valorum in 1,000 BBY, many Outer Rim systems and sectors benefited from the Republic granting greater administrative power to local and sector governments.[1] With the demobilization of the Republic Military in favor of smaller Judicial Forces, many Outer Rim governments developed their own local defense forces including Utapau.[17] Over the centuries, much of the galaxy including the Outer Rim presumably recovered from the Sith Wars. Still, the region was considered remote and undeveloped by the Core-based government.[1]

Around 702 BBY, the Grissmath Dynasty ruled the Meridian sector. The Dynasty exiled dissidents to Nam Chorios and attempted to exterminate prisoners by seeding the planet with the Death Seed Plague.[18] However, they survived and their descendants would become known as Oldtimers.[18] At an unknown date, the capital Meridian was reduced to a charred radioactive ball as a result of orbital bombardment. Soon, the Grissmath Dynasty collapsed.[18]

In 600 BBY, a fallen Jedi Knight named Allya was exiled to the rugged frontier world of Dathomir.[19] The planet had served as an outlying penal colony since it was colonized around 3,000 BBY by the Paecian Empire.[19] Gradually, she established a matriarchal Force-sensitive cult known as the Witches of Dathomir.[19]

In 490 BBY, a free enterprise fiefdom known as the Corporate Sector was established in the Outer Rim, in the Tingel Arm region, to resolve differences between the Republic government and the various corporations and to establish a free trade zone. Over the following centuries, the sector became dominated entirely by various corporate interests including Kuat Drive Yards, Cybot Galactica. The sector had its own government which remained outside the jurisdiction of the Coruscant government known as the Corporate Sector Authority.[1]

In 340 BBY, the Jedi training vessel Chu'unthor crashed on Dathomir.[19] A group of Jedi (including Yoda, Gra'aton, and Vulatan) were sent to attempt a rescue of the vessel's crew and passengers, but were stopped by the Witches of Dathomir.[19] However, after Yoda saved the life of a young witch named Rell, the two parties were able to come to a peaceful settlement. In 300 BBY, the Republic took over Lianna in the Tion Cluster from Barseg.[20]

In 150 BBY, the Bakur Mining Corporation of Hemei IV under Captain Deredith Arden colonized the planet of Bakura in the Shiritoku Spur.[21] Around 100 BBY, Sienar Technologies set up operations on Lianna. Soon after, the company was taken over by Kerred Santhe, who moved his company's headquarters to Lianna.[20]

In 124 BBY, the Jedi Master Omo Bouri helped passed the Treaty of Trammis.[1] However, that same year, the Galactic Senate declared the Outer Rim to be a free trade zone. This allowed corporations like the Trade Federation and the Commerce Guild to represent local governments that aligned with them in the Senate, giving them voting power.[1][22]

In 53 BBY, the dictatorial Governor of Telos Crion was overthrown during the Telosian Civil War.[23] In 44 BBY, the pirate Iaco Stark was defeated in five consecutive battles around Troiken during the short-lived Stark Hyperspace War.[24] Despite the defeat of the piratical Stark Commercial Combine, the heavy casualties sustained by the Republic forces in bringing down the insurrection renewed calls for the rejuvenation of the Republic Army and Navy.[1]

In 33 BBY, a trade summit on Eriadu was interrupted by the successful assassination of six Trade Federation Directorate members and a failed attempt against Chancellor Finis Valorum. The Summit ended prematurely, with nothing resolved.[25]The Senate unilaterally passed Senate Resolution BR-0371 which increased taxation of hyperspace routes in the Mid and Outer Rim with revenue going to the Republic. Aspiring Senator Palpatine—who had orchestrated the assassination as Darth Sidious—was a prominent supporter of the resolution.[1][26]

In defiance of the taxation of the Outer Rim trade routes, Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray blockaded the Mid Rim world of Naboo in 32 BBY.[26] Concurrent with the events on Naboo, the Force-strong Anakin Skywalker was discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn on the remote desert world of Tatooine. Shortly afterward, Qui-Gon and his Padawan Kenobi were attacked by Darth Maul.[26]

In 29 BBY, the Republic Outland Regions Security Force under Wilhuff Tarkin launched an unsuccessful attack against the planet Zonama Sekot in the Gardaji Rift. In response, the sentient world unveiled its own hyperdrive system and fled into the Unknown Regions.[27]

Between 24 BBY to 22 BBY, dissatisfaction with the Republic for various reasons culminated in the Separatist Crisis. The Outer Rim, dissatisfied with their lack of representation in the Senate, and the disproportionate amount of economic or military attention they received, even during times of crises, made up a large portion of those who supported the Separatists. Under the leadership of former Jedi Count Dooku, various worlds, corporations and factions across the galaxy seceded from the Republic. Many Outer Rim worlds including Geonosis, Muunilinst, Jabiim and Sullust joined the budding Confederacy of Independent Systems, offering their labor and resources to the Separatist cause.[1][28]

In 22 BBY, the Elrood, Danjar, Tantra, Sluis, Lahara and Abrion sectors left the Republic; bringing parts of the Rimma Trade Route, Mirgoshir hyperspace crossroads and over 200 agriworlds under Separatist control.[1]Later that year, the Clone Wars started with the Battle of Geonosis which pitted the clone-based Grand Army of the Republic against the Separatist Droid Army.[1][28]

Lianna was strategically important to the Republic as the site of a Sienar Fleet Systems starfighter facility. With Raith Sienar’s designers working on new fighters for the Republic Navy, it was invaded by Separatist forces. However, Republic forces under the Jedi General Cei Vookto repelled them.[1][29] In 22 BBY, Republic forces under Kenobi and Skywalker captured the Separatist financial center Muunilinst.[1]

Another important Outer-Rim planet was Tatooine since Jabba the Hutt controlled major routes. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano went there to arrange a peace treaty with Jabba as did Count Dooku. This resulted in the Republic earning the alliance of Jabba Desilijic Tiure's criminal empire against the CIS during the war.[30]

During the Battle of Hypori, the cyborg Kaleesh General Grievous made his first debut.[31] That same year, the Republic suffered a massive defeat at Jabiim.[1][32] In 20 BBY, Honoghr was devastated by the toxin TriHexalophine1138 released from the crashed Lucrehulk-class Core Ship Gahenna.[1][33] Separatist forces also conquered Gentes, enslaving the native Ugnaughts.[34]

Republic forces under Skywalker succeeded in securing the key HoloNet hub of Praesitlyn.[1] By 19 BBY, the Republic had driven much of the Confederacy from the Core Worlds and Colonies into the Mid and Outer Rims. This set the stage for the Outer Rim Sieges which embroiled worlds as myriad as Saleucami, Utapau, Sluis Van and Felucia.[1] With the death of the Separatist Council on Mustafar, the Confederacy was defeated by the Republic's successor state—the Galactic Empire.[35]
The Imperial eraEdit The Imperial era sectionEdit

Much of the early Imperial period was spent suppressing the remaining Separatist holdouts including Acherin, New Plympto and Enarc.[36][37][38][39]In retaliation for the signing of the Petition of 2000 by both Mon Calamari and Quarren senators, their homeworld of Dac was invaded by Imperial forces under Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin.[40][41] Under Order 66, all Jedi operating in the Rim were targeted for execution, forcing the survivors into hiding.[1]

Due to its distance from the Core Worlds, the region was home to many supporters of the Rebel Alliance.[4] Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker—son of Anakin Skywalker—was raised on the desert world of Tatooine.[42] Mon Calamari Admiral Ackbar, who became a prominent naval commander in the Alliance and New Republic during the Galactic Civil War, was a native of the watery world of Dac.[43] Jedi Master and Alliance operative Kyle Katarn, who destroyed the Dark Trooper program, came from the moon Sulon in the Sullust system.[44]

Grand Moff Tarkin was assigned the difficult task of bringing and keeping the Outer Rim Territories in line.[42] Much of the Outer Rim was consolidated under Oversector Outer.[45]As part of the Tarkin Doctrine, the planet-destroying Death Star superweapon was constructed for twenty years over the planet Despayre through the use of slave labor.[4] Soon after the battle station was completed in 0 BBY, Despayre itself was destroyed to test the Death Star's effectiveness.[46]

As a means of increasing the Empire's presence in this region, three Stormtrooper batches were grown in the Outer Rim. In 18 BBY, Palpatine dispatched the Eye of Palpatine dreadnaught on a mission to destroy Belsavis's Plawal Rift which sheltered Ho'Din Jedi Master Plett and the Children of the Jedi. However, the battlemoon was sabotaged by Jedi Purge survivors Geith and Callista Ming.[47][4][1]
The Outer Rim was filled with smugglers and bounty hunters.


During this period, Lianna in the Tion Cluster remained the main center of operations for the pro-Imperial Sienar Fleet Systems which supplied starfighters and starships to the Imperial Navy.[48] Around 15 BBY, Ylesia was first settled by Aruk Besadii Aora who established the Cult of The One and The All as a cover for their spice mining operations.[49] The Abominor known as the Great Heap was also destroyed on Biitu by the efforts of R2-D2 and C-3PO.[50]

In 13 BBY, the descendants of the Republic-era Grizmallt colonists in the Renatasia system were rediscovered. The next year, in 12 BBY, Imperial and Centrality forces under Osuno Whett conquered the Renatasia system.[51][4] In 11 BBY, Gizor Dellso's Separatist Remnant was defeated on Geonosis by the elite 501st Legion.[52] Around 9 BBY, Captain Thrawn finally succeeded in crushing the decade-long Kaleesh insurgency albeit heavy casualties on both sides. As a result, the Kaleesh Bentilais san Sk'ar joined the Imperial military.[53]

In 5 BBY, the Erhynradd Mutiny occurred.[54] In 4 BBY Moff Sarn Shild considered seceding from the Empire and carving out his own empire in the Outer Rim territories once he tapped into the wealth of the Hutt clans. During the Firrerreo Genocide that same year, the Firrerreo Procurator of Justice Hethrir destroyed all life on his homeworld of Firrere by unleashing a lethal strain of the hive virus. The planet was quarantined while thousands of adult Firrerreo were abducted and imprisoned in suspended animation aboard passenger freighters.[55]

Meanwhile on Rafa IV, the activation of an ancient Sharu relic discovered by Lando Calrissian known as the Mindharp unleashed subharmonic emanations which started a reversal of social order in the Rafa system.[56] The Toka were restored as the legendary Sharu while the pyramids crumbled, with strange, new cities emerging. This also created an interdiction field which prevented hyperspace travel in and out of the system for weeks. Many of the Human settlements had also been destroyed, and the surviving settlers fled. Trade with the Rafa system also collapsed overnight.[4]

In 3 BBY, the Imperials and Centrality attempted to exterminate the Oswaft species but were thwarted by the joint efforts of Calrissian and Vuffi Raa during the Battle of ThonBoka and the arrival of the mysterious Silentium. The Sorcerer of Tund Rokur Gepta was also slain during the battle.[57] In 2 BBY, Han Solo and Chewbacca accidentally started the Cult of Varn amongst the insectoid Kamarians of the desert world of Kamar who revered water.[58]

By 2 BBY, most of the Separatist holdouts in the Outer Rim had been absorbed into the newly formed Alliance to Restore the Republic, beginning the Galactic Civil War.[59]In 1 BBY, the Mon Calamari Resistance succeeded in wresting Dac from Imperial control.[4]However, that same year, Sriluur and Sulon were conquered by the Imperials.[15]Meanwhile, the Rebel Alliance launched an attack on Ylesia; disrupting the Besadii clan's spice mining operations and freeing the slaves.[60]

With the dissolution of the Imperial Senate in 0 BBY by order of Emperor Palpatine, Moffs and Regional Governors were given direct control over their systems and sectors.[61]That same year, the Rebel Alliance scored an important victory at Toprawa by capturing a large portion of the Death Star plans.[60] In retaliation, the Imperials destroyed Alderaan using the Death Star. However, the Alliance scored a major victory when X-wing pilot Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star during the pivotal Battle of Yavin.[61]

Later that year, the Outer Rim was a site of a battle between the Alliance and Imperials. After his exile, rogue Imperial Commander Rezi Soresh spent twenty-seven days on the run before settling in the Sixela system. There he established an outpost on a barren moon. After capturing the Arkanian colony vessel Endeavor, Soresh used the people on board as hostages to lure the Rebel pilot Luke Skywalker to the system in order to turn him into his personal assassin. Skywalker was tortured for two weeks. Soresh also used a brainwashed spy to lure the Alliance Fleet to the star system. Contacting Darth Vader via hologram, Soresh ensured the Sith Lord would arrive at the same time as the Rebel fleet. When the opposing fleets arrived, Soresh sprung his trap, launching prototype resonance torpedoes at the system's Blue giant star. Skywalker betrayed Soresh and freed his companions, who participated in the battle until the torpedoes hit the sun and started a chain reaction, forcing the Rebels and Imperials to escape. Soresh was killed by Han Solo near the end of the battle. The system was turned into dust and radiation when the sun went supernova.[62]

In 0 ABY, the Alliance managed to evacuate its base on Yavin IV despite an Imperial blockade. During the ensuing fighting, Admiral Ackbar launched a feint attack in the Vallusk Cluster to draw away Imperial forces. Meanwhile, Rebel General Jan Dodonna was captured and later imprisoned aboard Ysanne Isard's Executor-class Star Dreadnought Lusankya.[4] In 1 ABY, Bakura was annexed by Imperial forces under Governor Wilek Nereus. Ore from its mineral rich moons would be used in the construction of the second Death Star above the Forest Moon of Endor in the Moddell sector.[63]

In 2 ABY, the Rebel Alliance established a new base known as Echo Base on the icy world of Hoth.[4]In 3 ABY, Darth Vader's elite Death Squadron including his new flagship Executor launched an attack on Hoth, forcing the Alliance to retreat. Later, Cloud City in the gas giant Bespin was occupied by the Empire after Baron Administrator Calrissian defected to the Alliance.[64] Meanwhile, Imperial Admiral Harkov ended the Sepan Civil War.[65]

In 4 ABY, the Hutt Desilijic crime family suffered a severe setback with the death of Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine at the hands of Princess Leia. Later, the Rebel Alliance scored a major victory during the Battle of Endor with the destruction of the second Death Star and the Order of the Sith Lords with the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. As a result, the Rebel Alliance was reorganized into the Alliance of Free Planets with Endor as its capital.[1]

That same year, the saurian Ssi-ruuk launched an invasion of Bakura from the Unknown Regions but were repelled by the combined efforts of the local Imperial garrison and an Alliance task force under Skywalker.[63] Bakura subsequently joined the Alliance of Free Planets. During the brief Nagai-Tof War, the Nagai and Tof invaded Endor and Iskalon but were quickly defeated and retreated back into Wild Space.[15][1]
New Republic era

When news of the events on Endor reached the galactic public, hundreds of worlds predominantly in the Rimward territories joined the newly-formed New Republic—the successor to the Alliance of Free Planets. With the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader at Endor, the Imperial forces throughout the Rim were unable to put up and effective resistance against the New Republic.[4]Across the galaxy, the Galactic Empire fragmented into squabbling kingdoms ruled by local Imperial military commanders and Moffs who established themselves as independent warlords. Admiral Gaen Drommel established a dictatorship in the Oplovis sector while Grand Moff Ardus Kaine created the Pentastar Alignment which dominated a large area of the Outer Rim. Meanwhile, Moff Getelles and Admiral Zsinj consolidated their control on the Antemeridian and Quelii sectors respectively.[1]

In the wake of Endor, the Corporate Sector's capitalistic regime attempted to remain neutral and sold products to both the New Republic and the Imperial warlords. The New Republic, however, was too burdened with establishing a new government to sign a long-lasting partnership with the corporate-minded fiefdom—especially since some in the New Republic considered the Corporate Sector Authority to be just as bad as the Empire.

By 7 ABY, the New Republic's successes in securing the Outer and Mid Rim territories allowed the Republic to secure several key worlds in the Colonies and Core Worlds including Borleias and the galactic capital Coruscant itself. With the defeat of warlord Isard in the Bacta War which embroiled the Inner Rim Territories, Republic forces were able to turn their attentions to warlord Zsinj's territorial ambitions in the Outer Rim. By now, Zsinj was embroiled in war against both the Republic and rival Imperial factions. During the Battle of Ession, Alliance forces under Wedge Antilles scored an important victory against the warlord's forces. During the Battle of Selaggis, however, Zsinj tricked Republic forces under Han Solo into believing that his flagship Iron Fist had been destroyed.[1]

In 8 ABY, Zsinj unleashed his Orbital Nightcloak satellites on Dathomir in retaliation for the Nightsisters' failure to destroy the Singing Mountain Clan. However, the warlord was defeated in the succeeding Battle of Dathomir by a joined Republic and Hapan fleet under General Solo. With the acquisition of captured Star Destroyers supplied by the Hapes Consortium, New Republic forces under Admiral Ackbar were dispatched to the Outer Rim to finish off the scattered remnants of Zsinj's forces. Unfortunately mid-way, they were intercepted by Mid Rim warlord Treuten Teradoc who inflicted heavy casualties on the New Republic fleet, forcing a retreat to the Hast Shipyards. By the end of the standard year, the Republic controlled three-quarters of the known galaxy including large areas of the Outer Rim. The Outer Rim worlds of Dac, Sullust and Sluis Van became prominent member worlds of the New Republic within the region.[1]

However, in 9 ABY, the Republic suffered serious military reverses with the arrival of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Having returned from the Unknown Regions, the blue-skinned Chiss commander rallied the scattered Imperial forces and unleashed a military campaign against the New Republic. During the Battle of Sluis Van, an Imperial victory was narrowly prevented by the last-ditched efforts of Calrissian.[1]On remote Wayland in the Ojoster sector, Thrawn's forces acquired an operational cloaking device, several Clone Wars-era Spaarti cloning cylinders and the services of the Dark Jedi clone Joruus C'baoth. Utilizing these resources, Thrawn launched several attacks against Republic worlds including the Outer Rim worlds of Ord Mantell and Ukio. However, Thrawn's Noghri commandos turned against him and he was assassinated during the Battle of Bilbringi.[1]

Despite his death, the New Republic had lost a third of its territory to Thrawn's Imperial forces especially in the Rimward territories. The Republic was forced to move its forces further into the Outer Rim away from the strategically-important Core Worlds. Taking advantage of this, the clone incarnation of Emperor Palpatine launched a second offensive from his stronghold in the Deep Core in 10 ABY. Several key Core Worlds including the capital Coruscant were recaptured and the New Republic was forced to evacuate to Da Soocha V in the Outer Rim.[1]

Shortly afterward, Imperial forces attacked several New Republic worlds in the Borderland Regions and the shipyard world of Dac with World Devastators to punish the native Mon Calamari and Quarren for their resistance to the Empire. Due to the efforts of Skywalker and R2-D2, the Devastators were defeated.[66] In a second skirmish over Pinnacle Moon, Palpatine's flagship Eclipse was destroyed. In retaliation, he destroyed Pinnacle Moon itself with a projectile from the Galaxy Gun.[1]The Emperor continued to launch more projectiles, destroying unruly worlds and nearly crippling the New Republic. As a result, the Empire quickly regained key territories in the Outer Rim. However, this victory was short-lived as Palpatine's spirit was finally destroyed during a showdown on Onderon. By 11 ABY, the Galactic Empire had yet again descended into infighting amongst the Warlords and high military officers.[4]

Still, Imperial Royal Guardsman Carnor Jax and his Interim Council controlled a thin band stretching from the Outer Rim to the Colonies. Amidst the infighting among the Council, Xandel Carivus established himself as the new Emperor on the Outer Rim world of Ord Cantrell. Tensions between Carivus and fellow Imperial Baron D'Asta culminated in the Battle of Ord Cantrell where the former was forced to sue for peace.[67] During this period, several Yuuzhan Vong advance agents including Nom Anor were active in stirring up local conflicts.[1]

Meanwhile, New Republic attempts in the forms of Han Solo and Chewbacca to establish contact with Kessel were met with failure. The duo only succeeded in rescuing the Force-sensitive Kyp Durron from slavery. Fleeing into hyperspace, the former Rebels stumbled upon an isolated Imperial research base known as the Maw Installation. There, they encountered Admiral Daala—one of the few high-ranking female Imperial military officers and a protégé of the late Grand Moff Tarkin. During an escape attempt, the companions made off with an experimental Imperial superweapon the Sun Crusher, capable of destroying entire stars with a projectile. Shortly afterward, New Republic forces launched a successful attack on the Maw Installation, destroying both the Sun Crusher and the Death Star prototype and forcing Daala to retreat. Daala's surviving Imperial forces fled to the Deep Core and succeeded in unifying the Imperial forces there.[1]

As part of his efforts in establishing a New Jedi Order, Jedi Master Skywalker established a Jedi Praxeum at the former Rebel base on remote Yavin IV. In 12 ABY, Skywalker and Jedi Purge-survivor Callista succeeded in destroying the Eye of Palpatine in the Moonflower Nebula. Later that year, the New Jedi Order successfully fought off two successive attacks by Daala's Imperial fleet and the Empire Reborn.[1]Meanwhile, the Hutt crimelord Durga attempted to construct a down-scaled version superweapon known as the Darksaber in the Hoth asteroid field with the assistance of former Imperial weapons designer Bevel Lemelisk. A New Republic task force including General Madine and Admiral Ackbar succeeded in destroying the Darksaber by driving it into the asteroid field. In the ensuing conflict, Madine was executed by Durga.[68]

Following Daala's defeat at Yavin IV, Daala retired and was succeeded as Supreme Commander by Admiral Pellaeon —Thrawn's second-in-command. Under Pellaeon, the Imperial Remnant began harassing Republic shipping in the Outer Rim and consolidated Imperial control over that region and the neighboring Mid Rim and Wild Space. The Imperial Remnant also annexed Kaine's Pentastar Alignment.[1]

In 13 ABY, conflict broke out on Nam Chorios between the "Oldtimer"s and the more recent group "Newcomers". During a diplomatic mission to Chorios, Chief of State Leia Organa Solo was kidnapped by former Republic senator Seti Ashgad. Ashgad planned to unleash a deadly infection of drochs throughout the Meridian Sector called the Death Seed Plague as part of a deal with Moff Getelles and the Loronar Corporation. However, their efforts were thwarted by the combined efforts of the Skywalkers, Solo, Calrissian and Daala.[4]Later, Skywalker was able to negotiate and establish contact with the native crystalline Tsils who agreed to help eliminate the drochs within the sector. Meanwhile, the New Republic dispatched two full fleets and invaded the Antemeridian Sector. Getelles proved unable to stop them and the sector, along with much of neighboring space was captured by the Republic before Pellaeon halted their advance.[4]

In 14 ABY, Chief of State Organa Solo embarked on a diplomatic tour of several Rimward worlds with her three children Jaina, Jacen and Anakin Solo. At Munto Codru, the children were kidnapped by agents of the Empire Reborn. Their leader Dark Jedi Hethrir attempted to indoctrinate the Solo children and planned to sacrifice Anakin to the demonic Waru at Crseih Station. However, the Empire Reborn was defeated during a confrontation and the Crseih system was destroyed in the resulting supernova.[69]

With the defeat of the Empire Reborn, the Republic freed and repatriated many of Hethrir's former slaves including the kidnapped children on the Worldcraft Rebirth and the imprisoned passengers aboard Hethrir's passenger freighters.[55] At an unknown period prior to 17 ABY, former Jedi cadet Dolph overthrew the tyrannical Je'har regime on his homeworld of Almania. Having turned to the dark side he adopted the pseudonym Kueller and established a military junta which attempted to overthrow the Republic in 17 ABY.[4]He used rigged bombs to exterminate the populations of Pydyr and Auyemesh and then attempted to overthrow the New Republic through a mixture of subversion and terrorist attacks. After the defeat of Kueller, Alania came under the control of his chief lieutenant, Yanne, who opened diplomatic talks with the New Republic. However, Yanne was soon overthrown by Gant, who in turn was overthrown by an unstable military junta. As a result Almania remained impoverished and was never able to join the New Republic.[4]

As of 22 ABY, trade languages were common in the Outer Rim.[69]

In 25 ABY, much of the Outer Rim was devastated by the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. However, undercover Yuuzhan Vong operatives had already infiltrated various Outer Rim worlds since the Clone Wars[1] including Belkadan, Artorias and Helska 4; the latter becoming a base for the advanced invasion force known as the Praetorite Vong. The Yuuzhan Vong began their attack at Vector Prime in the northern quadrant. Following events in the Expansion Region, the Yuuzhan Vong Warmaster Shedao Shai authorized the use of the Yo'gand's Core tactic on Sernpidal, destroying the world and killing millions.[70]

After attrition warfighting, the New Republic destroyed the Praetorite Vong base on Helska 4 which hampered the Yuuzhan Vong war effort by two months. However, the Coruscant government underestimated the Yuuzhan Vong and was reluctant to commit resources to the Outer Rim. In a swift blitzkrieg, the invaders seized a string of worlds including Dubrillion, Destrillion, Dantooine[71], Artorias, Rychel, New Holgha and Garqi. Billions of sentients were displaced resulting in a massive refugee problem.[1]

Having seized the north-eastern quadrant of the Outer Rim and severed the Hydian Way and the Perlemian Trade Route, the newly-formed Yuuzhan Vong Empire then proceeded into the Mid Rim and Expansion Region as part of their campaign to seize the strategically-valuable Core region. In 26 ABY, the Yuuzhan Vong invaded Hutt Space but failed to penetrate the well-defended Bootana Hutta enclave.[15] As part of their campaign against the Jedi, the Vong and the collaborationist Peace Brigade destroyed the Jedi Praxeum on Yavin IV where they established a damutek colony. This colony became the birthplace of the Jeedai heresy which drew a substantial following among the lowly Worker caste and Shamed Ones.[72]

During a mission above Myrkr in 27 ABY, the Jedi sustained heavy casualties including the death of Anakin Solo.[73] With the loss of Coruscant that year, the New Republic relocated to the strategically important Outer Rim world of Dac which retained its importance as a military shipyard. The new Chief of State Cal Omas had the New Republic reformed as the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances which increased the power of the judiciary over the Senate. In 28 ABY, the Galactic Alliance recaptured Ylesia from the Peace Brigade but their successes were dampened by Yuuzhan Vong victories in Barab I, Rutan and Belderone.[1] Following an attack on Yaga Minor and Muunilinst[74], the Imperial Remnant entered the war on the side of the Republic , protecting its holdings on Bastion and nearby worlds.[74]

Meanwhile, the Ssi-ruuvi Imperium attempted a second invasion of Bakura with the support of the treacherous Bakuran Prime Minister Molierre Cundertol but were repulsed by the Bakurans, the Galactic Alliance and the P'w'eck Emancipation Movement.[75], The southern quadrant was not attacked while the Yuuzhan Vong limited their campaign in the Tion Cluster to seizing several fringe worlds including Caluula.[76]

In 29 ABY, the Yuuzhan Vong launched an ill-fated final offensive against Dac which the Alliance took advantage of to launch a counter-attack on Coruscant, recapturing it after prolonged fighting. The Alliance unleashed the Alpha Red bioweapon on Caluula which eliminated the Yuuzhan Vong garrison but then mutated and destroyed the planet’s biosphere.[77] With the end of the war, the Outer Rim returned to the control of the Galactic Alliance while the Hutts reasserted control over their region of space. However, little central government existed in the region while the slave-trading Senex and Juvex Sectors encouraged the immigration of refugees.[15]


About a decade after the calamity of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Outer Rim was the site of battlegrounds for the Second Galactic Civil War, on planets such as Ossus; however, it did not play a very important role in that conflict. In 43.5 ABY, when the exiled Luke Skywalker and his son traveled away from Coruscant, they found a lost Sith order in the Outer Rim as well as a huge being of dark-side energy by the name of Abeloth in the Maw Cluster.

In 127 ABY, Darth Krayt's resurgent One Sith order collaborated with the Yuuzhan Vong pariah Zenoc Quah to sabotage the Ossus Project—a joint initiative by the the Jedi and the Yuuzhan Vong to terraform several devastated worlds as a peaceful gesture. This action stirred anti-Vong sentiment which the Fel Empire—the successor state to the Imperial Remnant—took advantage of to invoke war on the Alliance. By 130 ABY, the Alliance had capitulated and the Imperials seized Coruscant. However, Krayt toppled the ruling Roan Fel and re-established the Empire as his own Sith Empire.

The Jedi Academy on Ossus was a battleground of the Third Jedi Purge. Purge survivor Cade Skywalker, a member of the legendary Skywalker family, traveled through the Outer Rim in order to redeem himself. Various Rim worlds like Socorro, Daluuj, Borosk, Iego, Munto Codru and Wayland were the sites of skirmishes between the One Sith and their Jedi, Fel-loyalist and Alliance opponents. In 137 ABY, Roan Fel's forces recaptured Bastion and secured the surrounding space. A joint Alliance and Imperial force raided the Sith stronghold of Dac; damaging the Mon Calamari Shipyards and capturing the Advanced Star Destroyer Imperious.

The Sith retaliated with a genocide targeting the Mon Calamari species. After several setbacks, Darth Wyyrlok initiated the Final Protocol which authorized the poisoning of Dac's oceans with toxins crafted by Sith scientist Vul Isen. The toxins killed all life within the ocean world within days, prompting the Alliance and Imperials to pool their resources into organizing a mass evacuation. They succeed in evacuating 20% of the planet's population including billions of Mon Calamari, Quarren, Whaladons and Moappa but Dac was rendered uninhabitable.

Piracy was rife in the Arkanis Sector which became the site of a Sith ambush against Admiral Gar Stazi's Alliance forces. Black Sun's operations in the region particularly Tatooine was also smashed by the efforts of Cade and Gunn Yage. During Operation Thunderstroke, Sith forces attempted to ambush and capture Roan Fel at Agamar but only succeeded in capturing his daughter Marasiah Fel. Later, the Sith's poisoning of Da Soocha and the destruction of the Hutt Temple Maya Armus on Napdu prompted the Hutts into entering the conflict against the Sith on the side of the Alliance and Imperials.
Government

Due to its proximity from the Core Worlds, the influence of any galactic region was profoundly limited throughout the Outer Rim. As a consequence, communications and law enforcement in the region were limited and the various institutions of galactic civilization were little more than concepts.[15]Various crime and atrocities went unnoticed particularly in Hutt Space, the Juvex and Senex sectors, and the Kanz Sector during the Kanz Disorders. Throughout the history of the Galactic Republic, central control was limited and much of this was lost during the New Sith Wars.[15]

The Republic never regained full control over the region which was further affected by the disestablishment of the Republic Military under the Ruusan Reformations. The ensuing power vacuum was gradually occupied by the Hutts and conglomerates like the Trade Federation and Commerce Guild. Political representation of many Outer Rim worlds in the Galactic Senate was bought up by the latter while many disillusioned worlds joined the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[15]

The Clone Wars provided the opportunity for the Republic and its successor state the Galactic Empire to re-establish central albeit militarized control over the region. Throughout the Galactic Civil War, central government faltered at alternating intervals due to the fighting between Imperial forces and the New Republic. What little remained collapsed during the devastating Yuuzhan Vong War and efforts to re-establish it was hampered by the Second Galactic Civil War. Thus, much of the region was left to their own devices.[15]

The Tingel Arm


The Tingel Arm was an exterior arm of the galaxy, located on the edge of the Outer Rim Territories by the Imperial era, and separate from both Wild Space and the Unknown Regions. It was home to the Corporate Sector, located at the end of the galactic peninsula.

Before the onset of the Great Galactic War, the reformed and rebuilt Sith Empire began to make its opening moves against the Galactic Republic. They first began a period of covert operations and seeded the planets of Belkadan, Sernpidal and Ruuria with puppet governments that showed loyalty to the Republic but were truly subjects of the Sith Empire. It was during this stage that Sith battlecruisers were first sighted on the Tingel Arm with the Aparo sector subjugated though the Republic were unaware of who these intruders were at the time. During a diplomatic mission sent to the unknown fleet, the Sith struck and destroyed the envoy's vessel. When the Republic Navy rallied to attack this foe, they found their forces trapped in Sith territory as the infiltrated planets showed their true nature thus allowing the Republic forces to be devastated. In the aftermath, only a few number of ships managed to escape from the Sith and had been forced to scatter thus weakening the Republic's grasp over their territory as well as encouraging the Sith Empire to continue its onslaught.

In the time just after the end of the Clone Wars, Imperial authority was limited to the inner systems of the Arm, and it was rumored that remnants of the Confederacy of Independent Systems continued to be active there, from 19 BBY to as far as 3 ABY.[source?]

A year following the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion, the Galactic Alliance annually sent reconnaissance vessels out to the Tingel Arm in order to check that there were no lingering Yuuzhan Vong operating in the area, who where eventually vanquished.

Wild Space

Wild Space was the frontier of galactic society, separating the known parts of the galaxy from the Unknown Regions of the western half of the galactic disk, as well as the fringes of the Outer Rim Territories and the arms of the galaxy. The term had varied greatly over the years, encompassing all areas of partially explored or charted areas as known throughout various stages of galactic history.

History

The term "Wild Space" was first used in the Great Manifest Period when discussing the area of partially explored space to the "east" of the galactic core. This area, as it became settled, eventually became known as "the Slice." Over the years, different definitions of Wild Space evolved, dependent upon what was known or unknown to the broader galactic community at the time.[1]

One of Palpatine's last acts was to open up much of the region to more extensive exploration. Wild Space differed from the Unknown Regions in that most of Wild Space had been explored, with established hyperspace routes, whereas the Unknown Regions remained almost entirely unexplored.

The Unknown Regions, Unknown Space, Unknown Sector, or Unknown Territories was the collective term for all regions of the galaxy not formally charted; it differed from Wild Space in that Wild Space was usually minimally charted, but not fully explored.

The Unknown Regions was broadly defined as areas not connected with the skein of reliable or well-known hyperspace routes spanning the galaxy, did not look to Coruscant as the ultimate center of civilization, or were not under the broad hegemony of the Galactic Republic before the Galactic Civil War. Beyond the region’s outer edge lay the hyperspace disturbance beyond the edge of the galaxy.

History

Killiks moved from Alderaan to the Unknown Regions.


The reach of civilization extended at least nominally to the edge of the galactic disk—for instance, the territory of the Corporate Sector extended to the end of the Tingel Arm. The galactic disk and some satellite galaxies were mapped well enough that the omission of thirty-seven systems (including Kamino) from stellar charts were obvious gravitational anomalies, even when scanning from afar.

The large galactic volume designated as the "Unknown Regions" included uncharted areas in dense nebulae, globular clusters, and the galactic halos. 15% of the galaxy's stellar mass was estimated to be contained within the Unknown Regions.[1][2] Many governments repeatedly sent scouts into the Unknown Regions. General Wedge Antilles once remarked that "If you continue to map the Unknown Regions, you'll have to call them something else."[3] During the early years of the Galactic Empire, a colonization corporation, Anawa, offered refuge to people by guiding them into the Unknown Regions where the corporation would administrate and police newly discovered habitable planets.[4]

The Unknown Regions included a unique section of the galactic disk to the "galactic west" of Bakura, Bilbringi, and the Imperial Remnant. A web of hyperspace anomalies in this section known as "the tangle"[4] impeded galactic exploration by the Republic for millennia.[2] Important powers in this area of space included the Chiss Ascendancy, the Ssi-ruuvi Imperium, the Vagaari, the Killik Colony, and the Empire of the Hand, but it was also home to species such as the Croke, the Ebruchi and the Eickarie. Though severely cut off from the rest of the galaxy, these species interacted with one another, and had created a sort of interstellar culture separate of that of the Galactic Republic or the Empire. Communication and trade were sparse and infrequent, but species such as the Lugubraa were found in the services of larger powers across the Regions. Common threats such as Mnggal-Mnggal brought together disparate species such as the Chiss, Lugubraa, and others to combat its encroachments.[4]

One hypothesis by a noted scientist suggested that a mass of dark matter intersected the galaxy in this region, creating gravitational anomalies that hindered navigation. However, the lack of any tidal disruption of the galaxy's spiral form (as shown in Jedi Archives) may have disproved this supposed dark mass. Alternate theories included "hyperspatial gravitic ripples", or the intentional construction of a barrier, possibly by the Celestials to hedge the expanding Infinite Empire or to contain Mnggal-Mnggal. What was known for certain is that the division between explored space and the Regions was almost precisely at the midline of the hyperspace disturbance that surrounded the galaxy.[2] It was clear, moreover, that much of the Unknown Regions were passable to determined travelers—for instance, Corellian traders had been in contact with the Chiss for many years before their "re-discovery",[5] the planet Ilum was reachable by Force-sensitive navigators,[2] the Rakata homeworld of Lehon was also reached by a Republic naval task force at the climax of the Jedi Civil War[6] and subsequently made a protected historical site by the Republic. Additionally, frontier spaceport worlds in the known galaxy, like Terminus, were known to be visited frequently by transports and traders from the Unknown Regions.[2]

In some eras, like during the Great Galactic War and the Cold War, prominent species like the Chiss cooperated with galactic powers like the Sith Empire.[7] The Ascendancy also participated in diplomatic talks with the Republic[8] and later maintained relations with both the Galactic Empire,[4] the New Republic, the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances[9] and the second Galactic Empire ruled by Darth Krayt.[10] As part of the relations with the First Galactic Empire, the Chiss Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn, a native of these parts, was dispatched aboard the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Admonitor to the Unknown Regions during the years of the Galactic Civil War, ostensibly on a simple mapping expedition, but in reality to explore and subjugate entire sectors for the Galactic Empire. While there, Thrawn appeared to have encountered the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong. He also created a shadow Empire, the Empire of the Hand. Normalized relations between the Chiss Ascendancy and the New Republic were established following the Galactic Civil War, and the portion of the Unknown Regions existing in the galactic disk was essentially eliminated thanks to the availability of Chiss star-charts.[2]

Traffic And Trade Routes

Various established "ways" like hyperlanes passed through the sectors. These routes were explored and established by spacers known as hyperspace explorers (like Gav Daragon and Aitro Koornacht). Astromech droids had the responsibility of guiding spaceships through these routes.
